Over the five years 15,000 new homes are to be built in Glasgow as the city council approves its Housing Strategy for 2017/22

A new long  term strategic plan has been approved to build 15,000 new homes in Glasgow. The Housing Strategy for 2017/22 was green lit by the city council’s executive committee and aims to increase the supply available while improving the quality of homes. The Housing Strategy will span a total of five years, determining the future housing provision for the city.

Glasgow was reported as having a population of 606,000 people living in more than 297,000 homes in 2015. Of this number 44 per cent are owner occupied, while 36 per cent are socially rented. The remaining 20 per cent are privately rented.

Strategic plan

The plan included two main themes with six strategic priorities. This is further broken down into 50 key actions that need to be achieved by 2022.

The six strategic priorities include:

  1. Promoting area regeneration and enabling investment in new build housing
  2. Managing, maintaining and improving our existing housing stock
  3. Raising management standards in the private rented sector
  4. Tackling fuel poverty, energy inefficiency and climate change
  5. Improving access to housing across all tenures
  6. Promoting health and wellbeing

Leader of Glasgow City Council Councillor Frank McAveety said: “Our homes are undoubtedly one of the biggest contributors to our quality of life, and through this strategy, we aim to ensure that the people of Glasgow are able to find the best and most suitable housing they can.

“Over the next five years, Glasgow’s Housing Strategy will play its part in our efforts to create sustainable communities with affordable homes in the city, with 15,000 new homes being built.”

The strategy was made after extensive consultations were held alongside research commissioned by the council. The Scottish government will now receive the Housing Strategy.
