Manufacturers often have a disconnect between design and manufacture.
Drawing offices generally have an established MCAD product like Inventor, but collaboration with the shop floor is often done via STEP/IGES files. The CNC operator uses his/her know-how to create toolpaths and G-code in a 3rd party CAM application.
In some instances, machine operators interpret the geometry and manually create the G-code. Any subsequent changes that are made to the CAD model are not always reflected in the final workshop output, often leading to delays and costly errors.
Another issue faced by manufacturers, is customer supplied IGES files, which are often out of date, missing data, or are difficult to work with.
