BIM will be the future of the construction industry, according to Timetric’s Construction Intelligence Centre…
A survey of 100 people revealed building information modelling (BIM) is currently being used or piloted by some 49 per cent of respondents. In the next 12 months it is expected a further 10 per cent will adopt it.
The survey, which was carried out by Timetric’s Construction Intelligence Centre (CIC), also found there was a degree of uncertainty over the implementation of BIM. Some 27 per cent said the industry still had work to do to understand the technology and how to manage it.
Furthermore, implementation of BIM was thought by nine per cent of respondents to have no demand, with 16 per cent saying demand was limited.
Despite this, over the next two years 27 per cent of construction firms are expected to use the BIM Level 2 industry standard.
BIM Level 3 is expected to be adopted by 37 per cent in the next three to five years. Timetric said this would be driven by competition as well as changes to legislation.
Timetric CIC’s manager Neil Martin said: “BIM will grow in usage as the client and those offering BIM services recognise its value.
“Cost savings and improving operational efficiency are important drivers for its uptake by practitioners and its perceived effect on return on investment; which is largely the reduced cycle time for project activities and delivery as well as lower project cost.”
