Engineering design and project management consultancy Royal HaskoningDHV has harnessed LR’s BIM Level 2 accreditation to save time, cut costs and improve service

Not only does LR’s industry-leading BIM accreditation help companies prove compliance, but it also helps them become more efficient. Ask Royal HaskoningDHV.

The independent engineering design and project management consultancy’s goal for BIM was to save time, money and resources, thereby helping them provide a superior service to its clients.

“We needed to improve our project outcomes via closer collaboration internally and externally,” said Casey Rutland, UK director of digital for RoyalHaskoningDHV.

They approached LR for its BIM Level 2 accreditation, which is the only independently developed BIM Level 2 Business Systems Certification that ranges across the scopes of BIM involvement throughout construction’s diverse supply chain.

LR’s BIM Level 2 accreditation represents an independent public statement of compliance with the PAS 1192 series of standards, BS 11000, the collaborative standard, and the LR BIM Accreditation Guidance document, which introduces another level of risk management.

While the BIM process was given some traction by the UK government when it required all public construction projects to be performed by BIM-ready organisations, the BIM process has now developed its own momentum. The wider industry recognises that the process makes not only the design and construction phases more efficient, but also provides benefits during the operational phase of a building.

When LR performed a gap analysis on Royal HaskoningDHV, it found a well-developed BIM strategy, along with a documented system that was already in place. Some staff training had already been undertaken as well. LR then created an open-discussion forum to encourage learning at each stage of the accreditation process. Working with and supporting Royal HaskoningDHV, rather than just conducting a test, meant staff understood more about the implementation process.

Rutland added: “Knowing that LR has a strong global reputation that sits well within the ethos of our company, we knew we’d chosen the right partner to work with. In all, the assessment experience was a team approach to us achieving our accreditation.”
