The University of Huddersfield has signed a five year deal with a Chinese contracting firm in a bid to help develop the use of new technology…

The University of Huddersfield it to work alongside Chinese construction firm Beijing Construction Engineering Group (BCEG) to help the firm use new technology.

The two organisations have signed a five-year deal, which could provide opportunities for research staff and students through work placements and potential employment.

BGEC is ranked among the world’s top 50 contractors and has some 20,000 employees on its payroll. It recently launched a UK construction diversion after joining the consortium planning to invest £800m in Manchester Airport City.

The deal will see the university help BGEC develop its expertise in lean construction, healthcare infrastructure and BIM.

Workshops and live projects will be hosted to develop skills and knowledge, using research from university staff and students.

Professor of Surveying and IT at the University of Huddersfield Song Wu said: ‌“BIM improves collaboration at the design stage, reduces changes during construction and also improves facility management at the operational stage.”

In September last year, the university launched a new MSc course, Design Integration and Building Information Modelling, enabling students to study the speciality in depth.
