Construction Talk Podcast

In this episode of the Construction Talk Podcast, Nathan Marsh, Chief Digital Officer at Turner and Townsend, talks to Peter Haddock about society embracing technology and how tech itself is getting increasingly capable

The Construction Talk Podcast kicks off with Nathan Marsh, who discusses insights on construction data security, and getting data right.

“In the past few years, the industry has seen the need to embrace technology in all aspects of works”, Marsh explains. “This mass wave of the normalisation of using technology has increased our capability of using it”.

Digital technology is something that Turner and Townsend are extremely passionate about, the organisation is implementing digital across through robots and machine learning.

For Marsh, when using technology across construction projects, businesses need to ask vital questions: “How is the use of technology going to make something safer, quicker, better, and faster? It is going to make it more inclusive and accessible?”

What are you doing with digital pathways that include things like digital rehearsal?

“Our current projects really look at getting a clear architecture set up at the start of the program and ideally at the investment stage which shows how different tools and capabilities can be used together.”

During the interview Marsh also the highlights importance of using digital technology to run ‘worst-case scenarios’ in digital systems, to predict outcomes on construction projects.

Knowing the early indicators of issues, and how we can model these issues into software is important explains Marsh. This way a business can deal with the underlying causes across construction projects.

Digitalising the visualisation of construction

Technology such as augmented reality and virtual reality, can bring a project to life. The use of this technology is also important across the supply chain, to help people in different sectors across the project.

Marsh adds: “Implementing this technology on site is important to improve safety, accuracy, and to get things right first time.”

How can we get to net zero faster with construction technology?

It will be hard to get to the goal of decarbonisation without technology visualisation, due to the complexity of the task, explains Marsh.

Construction technology is important for getting more accurate logs and data, as well as producing digital audits of carbon.

What are the roles that we are seeing in the future?

It is important that the industry imports skills, to focus on becoming a more inclusive and diverse sector, states Marsh.
