Mick George discuss their involvement with DIY SOS: The Big Build, providing products and services to aid the good cause

DIY SOS: The Big Build is the BBC’s flagship home renovation programme, which has been running for 18 years, and attracts up to 5 million viewers per episode. The concept of the award-winning show is to take on extremely Big Builds’ across the country, to help transform the lives of truly deserving families.

The latest selection for a makeover’ is most certainly a justified choice, and comes in the form of avid Cambridge United FC supporter, Simon Dobbin and his family home in Mildenhall, that is set to go under the hammer during November.

Nicole Dobbin, wife of Simon, said: ‘’I can’t believe that this is happening for us. The whole thing is actually so overwhelming, how everyone has come together to help us.’’

On March 21, 2015, Simon who is a loving father, husband and football fan, had his life change forever after being brutally set upon by a group of men in an unprovoked attack whilst following his football team at an away game. Unfortunately, the occurrence left Simon fighting for his life in intensive care, leaving him permanently brain damaged.

After many months in hospital, Simon is now finally home, living with his wife and full-time carer, Nicole.

The house is now unfit for purpose, and is inhibiting the rehabilitation process and placing continued strain on the family’s life, hence the decision to take on the development. The project will include a downstairs extension, with all the bespoke care provision that Simon will need: bedroom, physio space, wet-room, social space and the ability to access the entire ground floor and rear garden.

To achieve the desired goal, it is completely reliant on the support and generosity of the local community and tradespeople. One company that has come forward, and has a direct association given their sponsorship of Simon’s beloved Cambridge United FC, is construction business Mick George Ltd.

The organisation has agreed to provide in excess of £7,000 worth of products and services, predominantly in the form of Skips and Waste Management, to ensure the works remain on schedule.

Jon Stump, Finance Director at Mick George Ltd commented: ‘’This is just another example of how the local community is willing to unite for a fantastic cause. We have an affiliation with the project in a number of ways. Naturally our service and product offering lends itself to the Build’, as does the link with Cambridge United FC, as their front of shirt sponsor.

Stump Continued: ‘’Anything we can do to assist with Simon’s recovery process and the ability to improve his standard of life, is something that we’d welcome.’’
