Steel Construction Institute – Research, advice and support

The Steel Construction Insititute has been a trusted independent source of information and expertise in the steel construction industry for 30 years

SCI (the Steel Construction Institute) supports everyone involved in steel construction; from manufacturers, consulting and design engineers, architects, product managers, commercial directors right through to industry groups and peers.

Steel Frame

Consulting and design engineers look to SCI for reliable and robust technical information and training on best practice design of steel structures, including the latest codes and building regulations. Our industry-defining Design Guides and Eurocode advice is renowned; in fact you’ll find SCI behind the technical guidance texts of several of our construction peers. We regularly write design guides, with rules often implemented in software, for respected companies and industry organisations.

SCI Members rely on us to deliver numerous high quality benefits, the most valued of which is independent, technical advice available by phone or online – whatever the subject we can tell you how to do it so mistakes are avoided, or help you overcome them if mistakes have been made.

Our engineering expertise and consultancy services encompass all areas of development, assessment and specification of steel based products providing clients with support during all phases of the research, technical development and commercialisation of new products.

Above all, SCI works in partnership with clients, members and industry peers to help build businesses and provide competitive advantage through the commercial application of our knowledge. We are committed to offering and promoting sustainable and environmentally responsible solutions.

SCI Product Certification

Over fifteen years ago we developed the SCI Assessed scheme as a way of providing specifiers with third party assurance that the claims made by manufacturers were credible. The scheme continues to cover a broad range of products, for example from engineering specifications through to load-span tables for purlins. SCI Product Certification is building on this scheme, and covers not only technical content but also factory production control to provide assurance that a certified product is, and does, what it says. The current scope of certification is limited to areas in which SCI is a recognised authority, namely metallic cladding and light steel framing (used for in-fill walling, structural panels or indeed volumetric structures).

Certificates offer clear, unambiguous statements about compliance with all relevant requirements and regulations, and are structured to follow the Basic Requirements for construction works as set out in the Construction Products Regulation.

SCI Product Certification operates under its own rules of governance and has its own procedures and training requirements. It is subject to ‘observation’ by an Impartiality Committee to ensure that SCI certification activities are undertaken in an impartial, independent and open manner.
