BRE Manifesto 2024<\/h2>\n

This eBook, authored by the Building Research Establishment (BRE), outlines the policies that should be central for an incoming government\u2019s approach to delivering the standards that the UK\u2019s buildings need<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Building Research Establishment (BRE)<\/a> is an organisation dedicated to building science, operating on a profit-for-purpose basis. Since 1921, it has worked in partnership with governments to safeguard the safety and sustainability of the built environment.<\/p>\n

What challenges does the UK-built environment face?<\/h3>\n

The next government should commit to world-leading standards for UK buildings and issue a White Paper on building standards within six months of the new government.<\/p>\n

The UK built environment faces many challenges: a backlog of unsafe and unhealthy existing homes; a housing shortage requiring millions of new homes, which must be high-quality, resilient, and sustainable; and business buildings and infrastructure that do not meet the needs of the modern economy.<\/p>\n

The building sector is not prepared to deal with climate change’s adverse effects<\/h3>\n

The building sector\u2014the UK\u2019s second-largest source of carbon emissions\u2014is not decarbonising fast enough to keep on track with the net zero target and is largely unprepared to deal with climate change’s adverse effects.<\/p>\n

These challenges can only be met through a new policy approach. A new building standards strategy can power investment in better buildings by providing long-term certainty for owners, occupiers, supply chains, and investors.<\/p>\n
