{"id":100263,"date":"2021-10-12T11:00:57","date_gmt":"2021-10-12T10:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=100263"},"modified":"2021-10-12T11:49:54","modified_gmt":"2021-10-12T10:49:54","slug":"construction-product-manufacturers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction-news\/construction-technology-news\/construction-product-manufacturers\/100263\/","title":{"rendered":"Construction product manufacturers must embrace digitisation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Construction product manufacturers need to start sharing data digitally to support a safer and sustainable construction industry, says a new guide released by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theiet.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Institution of Engineering and Technology<\/a> (IET)<\/h2>\n<p>Regulation is coming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/fire-safety-competency-grenfell\/71192\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">post-Grenfell<\/a> and digital transparency will be key for construction product manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p>The IET\u2019s \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theiet.org\/impact-society\/factfiles\/built-environment-factfiles\/digitisation-for-construction-product-manufacturers-a-plain-language-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Digitisation for construction product manufacturers<\/a>\u2019 guide sets out a simple process to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/construction-technology-news\/digitalising-construction\/98937\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">implement internal digitisation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>It has been produced to help decision-makers in manufacturing identify:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Why supplying structured data is important<\/li>\n<li>How to avoid poor investment decisions<\/li>\n<li>How to set priorities and implement information management;<\/li>\n<li>And safe ways to share this information about products across the supply chain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In an endorsement to the guide and in support of the digitisation of the sector, Dame Judith Hackitt, government adviser on the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/building-control-news\/building-safety-regulator\/66203\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Building Safety Regulator<\/a>, said: \u201cIt will be a really positive contribution in helping people to understand what digitalisation means for construction products.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Making structured information available to the supply chain\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Rick Hartwig, IET built environment lead, said: \u201cAs we embrace a digital future, it\u2019s putting pressure on the manufacturing industry to act.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cManufacturers produce a significant part of the information required for a safer construction industry, but currently, this information isn\u2019t structured or shared in a consistent way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the UK construction industry is to meet the challenges of a digital future and respond to the requirements of a new building safety regulatory system, it needs manufacturers to structure and share their data safely and sustainably.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new plain language guide will help the industry embrace digitisation. It is only through this digital transparency that industry and society can differentiate between compliant and non-compliant manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaking structured information available to the supply chain is an essential step in this process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The benefits given in the report go beyond compliance to include commercial advantages such as increased revenue and margins, brand improvement and a smoother sales pipeline that comes from structured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/construction-product-data-2\/89784\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">product data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are also recommendations given to the UK Government, with Rick adding: \u201cWith a strong record of digitisation and the commitment to a digital economy, the UK Government is in an ideal position to take the lead in encouraging manufacturers to digitise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Welcoming the guide, James Talman, CEO of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfrc.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Federation of Roofing Contractors<\/a>, commented: \u201cWe welcome this guide as it will help companies\u00a0to navigate through the minefield of information and systems out there on product data.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUltimately this\u00a0will help\u00a0get\u00a0data to work efficiently and effectively for both suppliers and specifiers.
