JCB<\/a> is investing \u00a3100m to deliver super-efficient hydrogen engines, as it aims to have the first machines available for sale to customers by the end of 2022<\/h2>\n

A team of 100 engineers is already working on the hydrogen engines with the recruitment of up to 50 more engineers underway.<\/p>\n

The wraps have already come off a prototype hydrogen-powered<\/a> JCB backhoe loader and a second JCB machine \u2013 a Loadall telescopic handler \u2013 was unveiled at a central London event attended by prime minister Boris Johnson.<\/p>\n

\u2018Super-efficient, affordable, high-tech hydrogen motors\u2019<\/h3>\n

Prime minister Boris Johnson, said: \u201cIt was fantastic to see JCB\u2019s super-efficient hydrogen engines, which could overhaul UK manufacturing, help us to rapidly reach our climate targets and ramp up the UK\u2019s hydrogen economy \u2013 an exciting area that will be essential to tackling climate change<\/a>, creating new jobs and attracting investment.\u201d<\/p>\n

JCB chairman Lord Bamford, commented: \u201cOur sort of machinery will need to be powered by something other than fossil fuels.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe make machines which are powered by diesel so we have to find a solution and we are doing something about it now.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are investing in hydrogen as we don\u2019t see electric being the all-round solution, particularly not for our industry because it can only be used to power smaller machines.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt does mean we will carry on making engines, but they will be super-efficient, affordable, high-tech hydrogen motors with zero CO2 emissions, which can be brought to market quickly using our existing supply base.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese will be our industry\u2019s first hydrogen engines, developed in Great Britain by British engineers. Hydrogen motors have the potential to help the UK reach CO2 emissions<\/a> targets more quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n

JCB\u2019s hydrogen technology will be next on show in the Green Zone at COP26 in Glasgow as world leaders debate measures to drastically reduce greenhouse emissions.<\/p>\n
