{"id":100730,"date":"2021-10-21T12:26:50","date_gmt":"2021-10-21T11:26:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=100730"},"modified":"2021-10-21T12:26:50","modified_gmt":"2021-10-21T11:26:50","slug":"net-zero-building-nottingham","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/net-zero-building-nottingham\/100730\/","title":{"rendered":"Go-ahead for net zero building at Nottingham Trent Uni"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nottingham City Council<\/a> has given the green light for plans to deliver a new Art and Design building for Nottingham Trent University (NTU)<\/h2>\n<p>The new net zero building, designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawkinsbrown.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hawkins\\Brown<\/a>, will enhance the link between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntu.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nottingham Trent University<\/a> campus and the city.<\/p>\n<p>Its lower-carbon design will support Nottingham Trent University\u2019s ambition to deliver the building with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/building-carbon-footprint\/85540\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">net zero carbon emissions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The building at 40\u201342 Shakespeare Street will deliver a variety of workspaces for designing, collaboration areas, specialist studios and labs, teaching rooms and public exhibition and a caf\u00e9 space.<\/p>\n<h3>A whole-life net zero carbon university building<\/h3>\n<p>Combining traditional design practice with creative technologies, it will bring together film, animation, UX design, gaming design, graphic design and illustration courses, with dedicated spaces for visual communication, moving image and digital screen arts disciplines.<\/p>\n<p>Julia Roberts, partner and education &amp; research sector lead at Hawkins\\Brown, said: \u201cThis landmark building is designed to provide students with the best possible entry point into creative industries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur design brings Nottingham Trent University\u2019s creative arts subjects together in a single building that breaks down silos between disciplines and creates opportunities for collaboration in both physical and digital practice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsing our in-house carbon assessment tool, H\\B:ERT, we have been able to evaluate the carbon impact of our choices throughout the design process. This new building for Nottingham Trent University reaches a high standard for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/tackling-sustainability-scepticism\/84140\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sustainability<\/a> and the university has committed to making it a whole-life net zero carbon university building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The building has been designed to achieve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeam.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BREEAM<\/a> \u2018Excellent\u2019 and DEC \u2018A\u2019 rating. Design decisions, such as the use of post-tensioned concrete slabs and ceramic cladding, have been optimised to reduce their carbon impact using Hawkins\\Brown\u2019s self-developed, open-source H\\B:ERT software.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Marsden, executive dean for the School of Art &amp; Design at Nottingham Trent University, added: \u201cThis new development at 40\u201342 Shakespeare Street is not only an architecturally significant building for Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University but one which sees the School of Art &amp;
