Willmott Dixon<\/a> has been given the green light to start a \u00a329m net zero school build at Silverwood School\u2019s\u00a0Rowde\u00a0campus in North Wiltshire<\/h2>\n

The new zero school build will extend the existing campus to provide a high-quality environment for 350 SEND pupils by September 2023.<\/p>\n

To achieve net zero carbon<\/a> in operation, the buildings will utilise biomass boilers and incorporate a large array of photovoltaic (PV) solar panels that harness renewable energy.<\/p>\n

The school will also use Willmott Dixon\u2019s EnergySynergyTM service, which models energy performance target data against actual \u2018in-use\u2019 performance for three years, ensuring energy use targets set out at design stage are met when operational.<\/p>\n

The scheme will also deliver ecological enhancements, including improved natural grassland to increase the foraging resource for bats and other species, while hedgerows will be increased by more than 200%\u00a0as part of an overall\u00a0biodiversity net gain<\/a> of 14%.<\/p>\n

The net zero school build was given the green light after Wiltshire Council<\/a> strategic planning committee members voted unanimously to approve the plans, which have also been ratified by Natural England.<\/p>\n

Procured using the\u00a0SCF\u00a0framework, the project will see the creation of a \u2018school within a school\u2019, delivering facilities to accommodate 350 SEND school places for early years, primary,\u00a0secondary\u00a0and post-16.<\/p>\n

\u2018Now or never sustainability\u2019<\/h3>\n

Councillor Jane Davies, cabinet member for SEND at Wiltshire Council, said: \u201cThis is an important milestone in ensuring we have enough places to create a first-class education for our SEND pupils.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m delighted we can now start this important work. Our carefully\u00a0thought out\u00a0plans show how we will be mindful of the environment and rich nature on the site and the feedback from our school community and wider communities.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will continue to keep everyone involved as we embark on this important work and I look forward to seeing this exciting project evolve.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sean McKeown, headteacher at Silverwood School, said: \u201cThis is great news for all pupils at Silverwood School \u2013 both those attending now and in the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur school community across all three campuses have been involved in shaping these plans and we all look forward to seeing plans on paper become excellent facilities which will make a real difference to all our pupils and help meet a real need for additional spaces for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Richard Poulter, managing director for Willmott Dixon\u2019s Central South region, added: \u201cWe are delighted that planning has been approved.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur team have been working with all stakeholders on a building that provides those learning within its walls with a state-of-the-art facility that also adds to the surrounding community and environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cSustainability<\/a> is at the heart of our business and through our 2030 \u2018Now or Never\u2019 sustainability strategy, we have pledged that by the end of 2030 all our new buildings and major refurbishments will achieve net zero operational carbon.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough our work at Silverwood School, we are proud to be accelerating our commitment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Enabling works to prepare the site will begin in February 2022 with the start of the main construction works in March.<\/p>\n
