Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities, designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkins.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hopkins Architects,<\/a> has been submitted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxford.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oxford City council<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>The planning application outlines how the centre has ambitious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/towards-sustainable-buildings\/102144\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sustainability objectives<\/a> and would benefit the city of Oxford as well as transform the work of its scholars.<\/p>\n<p>The planning design showcases impressive entrances to the building, alongside a concert hall, and proposed green spaces which will surround the centre in Oxford University\u2019s Radcliffe Observatory Quarter.<\/p>\n<p>The university held two public consultations in 2020 and 2021 to gather feedback on the initial proposals.<\/p>\n<p>More than 125 responses were received from local stakeholder groups including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/heritage-building-bim\/92594\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">heritage and residents\u2019 groups<\/a> and individual respondents.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018A pioneering example of sustainability in architecture\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>William Whyte, professor of architectural history at the University of Oxford, said: \u201cWe are grateful to the people of Oxford who gave feedback on our initial proposals and we are delighted to submit our final designs for planning permission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities will transform the work of our scholars and offer untold opportunities for the city as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn inspirational piece of design by a world-leading architectural practice, it will also be a pioneering example of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/mmc-news\/sustainable-construction-modular-first\/101488\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sustainability in architecture<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>The planning application outlines many benefits, including:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Major new performances venues, including a 500-seat concert hall, a 250-seat theatre, and a 100-seat Black Box lab for experimental performance.<\/li>\n<li>Exhibitions, lectures and performances which bring Oxford\u2019s research to wide audiences.<\/li>\n<li>A schools and public engagement centre to bring schoolchildren in Oxfordshire into contact with Humanities research and researchers.<\/li>\n<li>New access routes and landscaping which opens up and connects the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter and the surrounding area.<\/li>\n<li>A caf\u00e9 and other meeting spaces which are open to the public, and accessible without having to pass through a security barrier.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The centre will be a highly energy-efficient building designed according to Passivhaus principles and will include sustainable insulation, new green spaces, cycle parking, and solar-powered roofing.<\/p>\n<p>The building also aims to be all-electric, with heat pumps rather than boilers.<\/p>\n<p>Planning application has been made possible by a \u00a3150m gift to the University from Stephen A. Schwarzman, CEO and co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackstone.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blackstone<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The building will boost teaching and research in the humanities at Oxford and provide them with a new home, which brings together seven faculties, a new institute for ethics in AI, the Oxford internet institute, and a new library.<\/p>\n<p>Oxford city council will consider the application after a 13-week consultation period, and will make their decision in spring 2022.<\/p>\n<p>If consent is given, the University aims to complete construction in 2025.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mk-custom-module-container\">\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Planning application for Oxford University\u2019s Stephen A.
