{"id":102307,"date":"2021-11-30T12:45:40","date_gmt":"2021-11-30T12:45:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=102307"},"modified":"2021-11-30T12:45:40","modified_gmt":"2021-11-30T12:45:40","slug":"bam-sunderland-station-transformation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/bam-sunderland-station-transformation\/102307\/","title":{"rendered":"BAM gets green light for Sunderland Station transformation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Construction and engineering company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bamnuttall.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BAM<\/a> has been appointed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkrail.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Network Rail<\/a> to build the new southern entrance of Sunderland\u2019s railway station<\/h2>\n<p>Plans for the station\u2019s revamp were approved by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sunderland.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sunderland City Council<\/a> in July.<\/p>\n<p>The overall TCF package for Sunderland Station improvements and associated works is \u00a316.3m.<\/p>\n<p>BAM has been awarded the contract through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/network-rail-track-maintenance\/98636\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Network Rail<\/a> Framework, and preparatory works are due to begin in early 2022, with demolition of the existing southern entrance clearing the way for the construction of a new statement building, which will overlook Market Square.<\/p>\n<p>The new entrance will feature a large glass wrap-around design, and will include a new ticket office and reception, public toilets, retail space, and cafes, as well as a new mezzanine level that will have office space reserved for railway industry staff.<\/p>\n<p>It is the first part of a six-year programme, that will see the northern entrance of the station reimagined and platform-level works undertaken to increase the capacity of the station, with four tracks and four platforms to separate Nexus and Metro from mainline services.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Encouraging greater use of the railway in the North East\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Rob Storrie, project director for BAM Nuttall said: \u201cWe know that this project has been a long-time in the making for Sunderland\u2019s rail passengers and we\u2019re delighted to get the green light to proceed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur priority throughout will be to deliver this project safely and with minimum of disruption to passengers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking with Network Rail and train operators, we will be putting temporary ticketing and access measures in place within the next few weeks before dismantling of the old station begins. We hope that the new station will be a welcome change for all passengers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe building features a glazed fa\u00e7ade that will help create a bright welcoming concourse. It will provide a much more fitting gateway to Sunderland and we hope that it will encourage even greater use of the railway in the North East.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Sustainable, high-quality facilities\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Tony Fitzgerald, construction director for BAM Construct UK\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/costain-road-project-north-east\/97189\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North East<\/a> team, also commented: \u201cWe have significant buildings under construction across Teesside, Tyneside and further afield.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot fail to see the significance of the new station to Sunderland\u2019s appeal to visitors and commuters alike.
