The statistics behind the day are shocking, to say the least.<\/p>\n<p>Figures from the charity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.org.uk\/nea-campaigns\/fpad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Energy Action (NEA)<\/a> show that over 4 million households live in fuel poverty, which is hardly surprising given that it\u2019s estimated that the increase in the Default Tariff price cap cased over 500,000 more households into fuel poverty. In addition to this, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/protect-low-income-families\/63485\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lowest income households<\/a> have seen their income fall by \u00a31000 per year.<\/p>\n<p>More than the personal debt and the sacrifices these households are making \u2013 to eat or be warm, cold homes cost the NHS more than \u00a32 billion every year in England and Wales. A truly phenomenal sum.<\/p>\n<p>The NEA gave some excellent recommendations for the UK Government and Ofgem to tackle this crisis, but with priorities and agendas at a national and local level that can feel competing, what more can be done?<\/p>\n<h3>What if we take the \u2018fuel\u2019 out of fuel poverty?<\/h3>\n<p>We are all aware of the climate crisis, the use of fossil fuels to heat our homes is causing a strain on both our planet and our lowest income households. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/start-your-retrofit-journey-here\/99164\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">retrofit programme<\/a>, to upgrade UK households would reduce both fuel costs and carbon footprints!<\/p>\n<p>With recent reports showing just how damaging our homes can be to the environment, this seems like the win-win scenario we\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n<p>Arup has crunched the numbers and estimated that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arup.com\/perspectives\/retrofit-to-end-fuel-poverty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">retrofit cost is only \u00a34,000 &#8211; \u00a35,000 per home<\/a>, with benefits to households, the NHS, and the planet this cost seems minimal.<\/p>\n<h3>How can this be achieved?<\/h3>\n<p>Ideally, the UK government will provide a national retrofit programme, but in the absence of this local authorities and housing associations can utilise the governments current schemes, such as the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund, to achieve this goal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swpa.org.uk\/frameworks\/energy-efficiency\/energy-efficiency-measures-associated-works-n8\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The SWPA Energy Efficiency Measures &amp;
