{"id":102565,"date":"2021-12-07T16:54:26","date_gmt":"2021-12-07T16:54:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=102565"},"modified":"2021-12-07T16:54:26","modified_gmt":"2021-12-07T16:54:26","slug":"fuel-costs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/fuel-costs\/102565\/","title":{"rendered":"65% of renters worried about paying their energy bills this winter"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The fuel crisis presents a major problem for millions of households in the UK, least of all those renting.\u00a0 Rising fuel costs means a hike in household bills \u2013 and the financial and mental toll on renters is significant<\/h2>\n<p>According to new research, 65% of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/renters-never-afford-home\/58125\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">renters<\/a> say increasing fuel costs will make it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/fuel-poverty-awareness\/102523\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">difficult for them to pay their energy bills<\/a>, and 62% state that they may not be able to afford rent this winter. An additional 57% cite the detrimental impact such worries are having on their mental health.<\/p>\n<h3>Can landlords help?<\/h3>\n<p>The research, conducted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartenergygb.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Smart Energy GB<\/a>, reveals that UK renters believe that landlords could do more to help.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly half (46%) think that landlords could make their homes more energy efficient so that they can save energy and money.<\/p>\n<p>Almost one-third (28%) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/social-housing-landlords-accountable\/85395\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">do not feel that their landlord supports them<\/a> in managing their energy use, with 85% claiming that costs will be higher because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/energy-saving-homes\/91049\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">energy saving measures<\/a> are not in place.<\/p>\n<p>Some examples of the ways that tenants believe landlords could make their homes more energy efficient include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>better insulation (73% renters)<\/li>\n<li>drafts filled in (54%)<\/li>\n<li>boilers upgraded (45%)<\/li>\n<li>double glazing installed (44%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Renters are taking measures into their own hands<\/h3>\n<p>Despite the restrictions on managing energy use and costs that tenants may face whilst living in a rented property \u2013 many are making changes of their own accord.<\/p>\n<p>Some of these environmentally friendly and cost-effective measures include everything from turning lights off (59% renters), to switching appliances off when not in use (56%), to most drastically \u2013 not turning the heating on, even when it is cold (44%).<\/p>\n<p>Another popular tool is a smart meter. 67% of tenants would like a smart meter to help them manage their energy costs.<\/p>\n<h3>Five tips on how landlords can support their tenants to be more energy-efficient and save money:<\/h3>\n<p>Smart Energy GB and Propertychecklists.co.uk have provided this information<\/p>\n<p><strong>1) Get a smart meter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The smart meter provides near-real-time information on the in-home display of the user\u2019s gas and electricity use in both Kwh and in pounds and pence so that tenants and landlords can monitor usage.\u00a0 This enables households to understand what drives their bills up and how they make small changes to save energy and money.\u00a0 What\u2019s more, the smart meter automatically sends over readings to the energy supplier.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Check what eco-features the property has already<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some properties may already possess eco-friendly features \u2013 make sure to identify them.\u00a0 For example, some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/heat-buildings-strategy\/100983\/\">newer boilers<\/a> boast an \u2018eco mode\u2019 setting that stops water from being preheated, saving the user energy and money.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3) Use LED lighting<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fitting LED lights could save \u00a340 a year \u2013 this is significant considering the rising utility costs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4) Fit thermostats on radiators<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thermostats allow tenants to heat only the rooms they use the most, avoiding wasting unnecessary energy and money.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5) If <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/carbon-targets-retrofitting\/100481\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">renovating or upgrading property<\/a>: insulate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By ensuring that roof spaces, walls and floors are properly insulated less heating is needed to heat a home and therefore money is saved.\u00a0 Insulation on the roof can save 25% of heat loss, and overall insulation can deliver savings for around 40 years.<\/p>\n<h3>Advice to landlords and tenants from the experts<\/h3>\n<p>Kate Faulkner, the founder of Propertychecklists.co.uk, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA great first starting point for landlords in terms of helping their tenants to take energy-saving steps is to arrange for a smart meter installation if they are the bill payer. Or if their tenant is the bill payer, to empower them to request a smart meter installation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSmart meters can also help ensure any problems with utility bill payments at the end of a lease are avoided and better still, the less money tenants spend on their utility bills means the more likely they are to be able to afford their rent payments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Iagan MacNeil, head of policy at Smart Energy GB said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHouseholds across the country are seeing their energy costs going up, so it is more important than ever that landlords do their bit to make their tenants&#8217; lives easier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a bill payer\u2019s right to have a smart meter, so we hope that landlords responsible for the energy bill will consider installing a smart meter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peter Smith, director of policy and advocacy at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.org.uk\/professional-advice-workers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Energy Action<\/a> commented:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTenants in the private rented sector often face higher energy costs as they tend to live in the least efficient homes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSmart meters can also reduce the need for landlords to support tenants through the moving-in process and reduce disputes with things like final meter readings at the end of a lease, leading to lower costs relating to disputes.
