{"id":102916,"date":"2021-12-16T09:54:35","date_gmt":"2021-12-16T09:54:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=102916"},"modified":"2021-12-16T09:54:35","modified_gmt":"2021-12-16T09:54:35","slug":"enabling-works","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/enabling-works\/102916\/","title":{"rendered":"BAM begins enabling works at Newcastle Gateshead Quays"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The Newcastle Gateshead Quays arena, conference, and exhibition centre scheme is slowly coming to life as hoardings have been erected and enabling works begun on the site<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/gateshead-quays-plans\/75385\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Developer Ask:PATRIZIA<\/a> has instructed contractor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bam.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BAM Construction<\/a> to work on the initial preparation works to the site between the <a href=\"https:\/\/baltic.art\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/sagegateshead.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sage Gateshead<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/gateshead.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gateshead College<\/a> on Hawks Road.<\/p>\n<p>Led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gateshead.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gateshead Council<\/a>, the development comes at a cost of some \u00a3300m of regeneration investment.<\/p>\n<h3>Looking to the future<\/h3>\n<p>The enabling works package is a positive step forward for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/gateshead-regeneration-scheme\/85189\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">developing the arena and conference centre scheme<\/a> and will create 2,000 new job opportunities (during construction and upon completion within the complex itself) and provide a \u00a370 million annual boost to the local economy.<\/p>\n<p>Over one million additional visitors are expected annually at the site.<\/p>\n<p>By working with key partners, suppliers and sub-contractors, BAM aims to ensure a smooth start to work with minimal disruption to surrounding roads and footpaths.<\/p>\n<p>Under a separate contract, full construction will begin in the new year and be completed by 2024.<\/p>\n<h3>What will be there?<\/h3>\n<p>Newcastle Gateshead Quays will feature<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>world class 12,500 capacity arena<\/li>\n<li>purpose-built conference and exhibition centre managed by ASM Global<\/li>\n<li>restaurants<\/li>\n<li>dual-branded hotel provided by Accor<\/li>\n<li>large areas of outdoor realm and performance space.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The site will be directly connected to Gateshead\u2019s district energy network and include cycle provision and electric vehicle charging points.<\/p>\n<p>BAM and Ask:PATRIZIA plan to incorporate various sustainability enhancements and significant social value measures.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018A vital site for Gateshead and the wider region\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Councillor Martin Gannon, leader of Gateshead Council, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are delighted to see work beginning on what is a vital site for Gateshead and the wider region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will work closely with our partners and local stakeholders to ensure the development progresses smoothly, and we deliver a project that creates good quality jobs and provides a huge boost to our economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>John Phillips, regional director for BAM Construction North East, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGateshead and the North East are very significant to us, because our people and our hearts are there and we know the local companies and suppliers so well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a transformational scheme which everybody will benefit from and we have a wonderful opportunity to use our time here to enhance lives and give something back to Gateshead and its people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very grateful that trust and confidence in BAM has allowed us to become involved at this stage.
