{"id":102979,"date":"2021-12-17T10:19:34","date_gmt":"2021-12-17T10:19:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=102979"},"modified":"2021-12-17T10:19:34","modified_gmt":"2021-12-17T10:19:34","slug":"levelling-up-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/levelling-up-funding\/102979\/","title":{"rendered":"Levelling up: Government pledges billions for councils to build back better"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Councils across England are set to receive \u00a353.9bn in \u2018Levelling up\u2019 funding for the next upcoming financial year, including an additional \u00a31bn of funding for social care, according to the latest government announcement<\/h2>\n<p>The package represents the largest cash-terms increase in grant funding in 10 years and makes an extra \u00a33.5 billion available compared to 2021-22, including a grant worth \u00a3822 million for councils to spend as they see fit to best meet local needs.<\/p>\n<p>The funding set out by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/department-for-levelling-up-housing-and-communities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities<\/a> will enable councils to continue to deliver vital services and look after the most vulnerable in their communities.<\/p>\n<p>The government funding will also support councils to play a significant role in the government\u2019s transformative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/department-for-levelling-up\/99389\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">levelling up agenda<\/a> as the country builds back better from the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>This settlement will also protect residents from excessive council tax increases. From next year, the amount of council tax that can be increased without a vote has been reduced to 2%, with an extra 1% for councils with adult social care responsibilities.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Build back better from the pandemic\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Secretary of state for Levelling Up Michael Gove said: \u201cCouncils continue to deliver for their communities and have a major role to play in our central mission of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/placemaking-regeneration\/100272\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">levelling up the country.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s funding package represents a real-terms increase from last year\u2019s settlement and will make sure councils can improve vital frontline services, support vulnerable people and protect residents from excessive council tax rises as we build back better from the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>The Provisional Finance Settlement includes:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>More funding for social care:<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The government is making more than \u00a31bn of additional funding available for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/health-and-social-care-services\/57593\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">social care,<\/a> ensuring councils can improve conditions for carers and those in need.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to this, \u00a3162m of funding will be allocated to prepare councils for social care reform and to help move towards providing a fair cost of care.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>Preventing excessive council tax rises:<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Residents will continue to have the final say over excessive council tax increases.
