{"id":103041,"date":"2021-12-20T12:47:21","date_gmt":"2021-12-20T12:47:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=103041"},"modified":"2022-02-02T09:50:25","modified_gmt":"2022-02-02T09:50:25","slug":"construction-recruitment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/construction-recruitment\/103041\/","title":{"rendered":"Construction recruitment overhaul needed to combat skills shortages"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The building engineering sector cannot replicate the past in its effort to solve the skills shortages \u2013 it is time for meaningful change in construction recruitment, say several leading industry figures<\/h2>\n<p>Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 200,000 experienced construction workers have left the industry, highlighting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/plant-equipment-supplies-news\/materials-and-skills-shortages\/101791\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">severe skills shortage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to industry network <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cibse.org\/networks\/cibse-patrons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CIBSE Patrons<\/a>, construction recruitment must deviate away from replacing workers \u201clike for like\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Net zero should change the conversation for our profession\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/sustainable-construction-skills-centre\/102937\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Net zero should change the conversation for our profession<\/a>,\u201d said Andy Sneyd, managing director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exyte-hargreaves.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Exyte Hargreaves<\/a>. \u201cIt requires different skills and a new outlook, which will only come if we reach out to people from all backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/brooke-sharp\/103038\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Our industry is not doing well on gender diversity<\/a> \u2013 and how are we doing on BAME? Not great. We don\u2019t properly reflect the society that we serve and that will become even more apparent as we work towards net zero,\u201d said the former President of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebesa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Building Engineering Services Association (BESA)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNet zero is the platform for us to change the conversation and look again at the type of skills we need \u2013 and that will help us improve diversity.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Vanishing workers<\/h3>\n<p>It has been reported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionproducts.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Construction Products Association (CPA)<\/a> that since the summer of 2019 nearly 223,000 workers had \u201cvanished\u201d from the sector.<\/p>\n<p>Half of these workers were aged between 45 and 55.<\/p>\n<p>Having joined the industry during the boom years of the 1980s, they had accumulated a huge amount of experience.<\/p>\n<h3>Accelerating crisis<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThis aging workforce demographic has been a concern for some time but was expected to impact in 10-15 years\u2019 time as people came up for retirement,\u201d said CPA economics director Noble Francis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike many other things, the pandemic seems to have accelerated this and plunged construction into a deepening skills crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CIBSE Patrons want to broaden construction recruitment \u2013 the net zero challenge would encourage those from:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>financial<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/digital-construction-skills\/96321\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IT\/digital<\/a><\/li>\n<li>creative<\/li>\n<li>energy systems<\/li>\n<li>Artificial Intelligence<\/li>\n<li>and many other backgrounds<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cYes, building services engineers will still play a vital role, but we will only remain central to this issue if we collaborate and recruit more widely \u2013 and beyond our traditional networks,\u201d said Patrons\u2019 chair Scott Mason.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do need a radical rethink if we are to broaden the appeal of this industry and of Patrons in particular. We are in a strong position to lead his change on behalf of the sector because we represent the whole supply chain.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Technology and design<\/h3>\n<p>Josh Emerson, a Patrons committee member, added that although the industry had access to technology and design processes to aid net zero, he questioned whether it had the necessary skills balance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should be right at the heart of the discussion because we are working with cutting edge products and smart systems that bring the dream of net zero much closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we will need to look well beyond our traditional boundaries to find people with the creative skills and imagination to apply them, so they can achieve their full potential,\u201d said Emerson, who is head of marketing at Swegon.<\/p>\n<h3>The \u2018golden triangle\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>The \u2018golden triangle\u2019 of net zero was \u201cpolicy, finance and delivery\u201d, argues Sneyd.<\/p>\n<p>The CIBSE and BESA could play an important role in reshaping government policy, he proposes.<\/p>\n<p>Their members would be able to contribute to the delivery of built environment solutions Sneyd adds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow we must get deeper into the finance side, which means we need to be sitting around the table with a much wider range of business people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNet zero is being driven by agile start-ups, lots of SMEs and a broad demographic with much better gender and ethnic diversities than our industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an opportunity to re-set our image as a much more \u2018go ahead\u2019 sector, which will make us more attractive to people who would not necessarily have considered engineering as a career,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n<h3>Rethinking recruitment strategies<\/h3>\n<p>David Frise is the BESA chief executive officer urging employers to utilise the net zero platform as a way of rethinking construction recruitment.<\/p>\n<p>He comments \u201cHealth, well-being, and productivity are uppermost in the thoughts of people designing indoor spaces \u2013 and while that instantly means \u2018ventilation and indoor air quality\u2019 to us;
