is injured severely in roof collapse"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>A self-employed builder has been fined after contractor is injured whilst working for him on a roof that collapsed on a construction site in Cobham, Surrey<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/courtsdatabase.co.uk\/courts\/view\/brighton-magistrates-court-and-family-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brighton Magistrates\u2019 Court<\/a> heard that on the 15 April 2019 the contractor in question was standing on the roof of a partially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/when-demolition-goes-wrong\/57051\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">demolished<\/a> single-story extension of a domestic building undergoing refurbishment.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/fragile-roof-fall\/101714\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">roof suddenly crumbled<\/a> to the ground and the contractor was injured.<\/p>\n<h3>Injuries<\/h3>\n<p>His right leg was worst affected and included fracturing to his tibia and fibular.<\/p>\n<p>The severity of the damage to his leg meant that it had to be amputated above the knee.<\/p>\n<h3>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hse.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Health and Safety Executive<\/a> investigated and discovered the following:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>there was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/the-building-safety-bill\/102877\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no safe system of work<\/a> in place<\/li>\n<li>the demolition work had not been adequately planned<\/li>\n<li>the stability of the structure during the demolition work had not been assessed<\/li>\n<li>there were no measures in place to prevent falls from the roof<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The court hearing<\/h3>\n<p>Patrick Sheehan of Surrey, trading as Mastercraft Building Services, pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3 (2) of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/ukpga\/1974\/37\/contents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Health and Safety at Work Etc Act 1974<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sheehan was ordered to pay a fine of \u00a320,000 and costs of \u00a34,383.<\/p>\n<h3>Following the hearing, HSE inspector Leah Sullivan made the following comments:<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThe contractor\u2019s injuries were life-changing and he could have easily been killed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis serious incident and the devastating effects on his life could have been avoided if basic safe systems of work been put in place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompanies should be aware that HSE will not hesitate to take appropriate enforcement action
