{"id":103371,"date":"2022-01-07T15:12:37","date_gmt":"2022-01-07T15:12:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=103371"},"modified":"2022-01-07T15:12:37","modified_gmt":"2022-01-07T15:12:37","slug":"hs2-green-tunnel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/hs2-green-tunnel\/103371\/","title":{"rendered":"HS2 reveals first look of \u2018innovative\u2019 green tunnel design"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hs2.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HS2<\/a> has revealed the first images of innovative \u2018green tunnels\u2019 that will be built across Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire, which will blend the new HS2 rail line into the natural landscape<\/h2>\n<p>The one-and-a-half-mile-long Greatworth green tunnel will be built in a factory in Derbyshire before being shipped to site, and assembled over the railway line as it passes the village.<\/p>\n<p>The tunnel will then be covered with earth and landscaped to fit into the surrounding countryside.<\/p>\n<p>Applying lessons from the construction of the latest French high-speed lines, an \u2018off site\u2019 modular approach was developed by HS2\u2019s main works contractor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ekfb.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EKFB<\/a> &#8211; a team made up of Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial Construction, and BAM Nuttall.<\/p>\n<p>The tunnel has been designed as an \u2018m\u2019 shaped double arch, and will have two separate halves for southbound and northbound trains.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of the whole tunnel being cast on site, five different concrete precast segments will be slotted together to achieve the double arch.<\/p>\n<p>All 5,400 segments installed at Greatworth will be steel-reinforced, with the largest weighing up to 43 tonnes.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/shift-to-net-zero-concrete\/100286\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">concrete and steel<\/a> are some of the biggest sources of carbon emissions within the construction industry, HS2 have reduced the amount of materials needed for the tunnel.<\/p>\n<p>This lighter-weight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/mmc-news\/modular-technology-golden-thread\/91987\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">modular approach<\/a> is expected to more than halve the amount of carbon embedded in the structure.
