HS2<\/a> have announced that all trains will be powered by zero carbon energy from day one of operation, which will offer a cleaner alternative to long-distance car journeys and flights and support the government’s climate target<\/h2>\n

HS2\u2019s zero carbon commitment will play a key part in the company\u2019s aim to make the project net zero carbon from 2035, with targets of diesel-free construction sites and major reductions in carbon emissions from the steel and concrete used to build the railway.<\/p>\n

\u2018A greener transport and construction future\u2019<\/h3>\n

HS2 minister Andrew Stephenson, said: \u201cWe know that the climate crisis<\/a> demands urgent action and these commitments from HS2 are vital steps towards achieving cleaner UK travel.<\/p>\n

\u201cHS2 is a once-in-a-lifetime investment and we want to ensure the country\u2019s biggest infrastructure project, supporting thousands of jobs and businesses, is underpinned by the Government\u2019s ambitions for a greener transport and construction future.\u201d<\/p>\n

HS2\u2019s Net Zero Carbon Plan<\/a> sets out how HS2 will achieve new carbon reduction milestones, support the decarbonisation of the UK construction sector and reduce the carbon footprint of the programme.<\/p>\n

The plan outlines major new targets, such as aiming for diesel-free construction sites by 2029, with the first one expected in 2022.<\/p>\n

Carbon emissions from steel and concrete will be reduced by 50% by 2030 compared with 2021 levels.<\/p>\n

To help achieve this, HS2 is collaborating with research organisations to accelerate innovation in low carbon technologies, such as alternative fuels and renewable energy.<\/p>\n

\u2018Providing a low carbon, long-distance transport solution\u2019<\/h3>\n

Mark Thurston, HS2 CEO stated: \u201cHS2 Ltd is completely committed to reducing our carbon emissions as we design, build and operate the new railway. We\u2019ve ensured that tackling climate change is an essential feature of all areas of our work – in design, in early works, and throughout major construction, allowing the project to build towards net zero from 2035.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe new targets announced today demonstrate the significant role HS2 will play in addressing the climate challenge, by providing a low carbon, long-distance transport solution and leading the construction sector to drive down carbon emissions.\u201d<\/p>\n

By 2035, HS2 will reduce carbon emissions as much as possible and make those that cannot be eliminated net zero by using natural or technological methods<\/a>, known as carbon offsetting.<\/p>\n

This means HS2 will remove the same level of emissions that are produced as it builds, maintains and operates HS2.<\/p>\n
