{"id":103639,"date":"2022-01-14T11:42:52","date_gmt":"2022-01-14T11:42:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=103639"},"modified":"2022-02-06T19:47:46","modified_gmt":"2022-02-06T19:47:46","slug":"november-construction-output","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/november-construction-output\/103639\/","title":{"rendered":"November construction output reaches largest growth since March"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>November construction output increased by 3.5%, reaching the largest monthly rise since March 2021, and the highest construction output since September 2019, as demand for work increases and supply chain pressures ease<\/h2>\n<p>Evidence from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/surveys\/informationforbusinesses\/businesssurveys\/monthlybusinesssurveyforconstructionandalliedtrades\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Monthly Business Survey for Construction and Allied Trades<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/surveys\/informationforbusinesses\/businesssurveys\/businessimpactofcoronaviruscovid19survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Business Insights and Conditions Survey (BICS)<\/a> suggested that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/construction-supply-chains-in-2022\/103628\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">supply chain issues<\/a> experienced over recent months had eased somewhat as businesses were able to obtain materials to complete and start projects.<\/p>\n<p>The unseasonal dry and mild weather experienced in November 2021 also helped, as this meant that construction sites did not lose many working days across the month.<\/p>\n<p>The survey also indicated that whilst the prices of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/construction-materials-shortage\/97085\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">construction materials<\/a> continue to be high, the rate of growth has eased in comparison with previous months.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Embedded post\" src=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/embed\/feed\/update\/urn:li:share:6887705381087326208\" width=\"504\" height=\"558\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Eight out of nine sectors report an increase\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>The 3.5% increase in construction output during the month of November represents a rise of \u00a3496m compared with October 2021, with eight out of the nine sectors seeing an increase.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Latest GDP figures for Nov last year much better than expected. Excellent news from ONS today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2014 Mike Mason OBE (@michrismason) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/michrismason\/status\/1481922974236217347?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 14, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Infrastructure, new work, and private housing were the largest contributors to the monthly rise in November 2021, increasing by 11.4% (\u00a3286 million) and 5.5% (\u00a3160 million) respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Infrastructure new work last saw stronger monthly growth in May 2020, with evidence suggesting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/on-site-renewables\/103460\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">renewable energy<\/a> projects along with road and rail developments are contributing significantly to the large increase in this type of work over the last 18 months.<\/p>\n<p>Private housing, repair, and maintenance was the only sector to have fallen in November 2021, decreasing by 2.4% (\u00a349 million).<\/p>\n<p>26% of construction businesses reported they had to change suppliers or were unable to source materials, goods, or services needed from within the UK.<\/p>\n<p>While still higher than the proportion for all industries sampled in the BICS, the percentage for construction businesses has seen a notable drop from 35%, in late October.<\/p>\n<p>The improvements in the supply chain alongside an increased demand, are likely factors to explain the strong monthly growth in output in November 2021.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Construction output in November \u201821 rebounded to pre-pandemic levels with GDP growing by 0.9%. 2021 was the hangover from 2020 but 2022 is the RECOVERY! <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/keepongoing?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#keepongoing<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2014 Paul David Munnelly (@PaulDavidTweets) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PaulDavidTweets\/status\/1481924749714509826?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 14, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h3>Three-month on three-month construction output growth<\/h3>\n<p>Construction output rose 1.6% (\u00a3671 million) in the three months to November 2021, marking the first three-monthly rise since July 2021. Similar increases in both new work and repair and maintenance contributed to the growth.<\/p>\n<p>Infrastructure new work and private housing new work made the largest contributions to the three-monthly rise, increasing by 3.6% (\u00a3273 million) and 1.8% (\u00a3164 million) respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Private commercial new work and public housing new work were the only two sectors to have seen falls in the three months to November 2021, decreasing by 3.2% (\u00a3176 million) and 7.5% (\u00a394 million) respectively.<\/p>\n<h3>Industry comments<\/h3>\n<div class=\"\">Sean Keyes, managing director, <a href=\"https:\/\/sutcliffe.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sutcliffe<\/a>:<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><b class=\"\">\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&#8220;Reflecting on the latest Construction ONS figures, you have to go back to September 2019 before the pandemic to see such strong figures in the construction sector, with the current output figure sitting at 99.8.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&#8220;These figures show an increase in output in the construction sector that is higher than approx 1% of pre-Covid results and it is certainly a very positive time for a lot of sectors as we head towards month two of 2022.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&#8220;The bounce back loans that many businesses were granted during the pandemic are quickly being spent and invested back directly into construction, we\u2019re finding that many sectors are remaining focused on their work and thankfully we are managing to get hold of materials which is a positive.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&#8220;There is however a shortage of quality staff and labour at the moment brought on by Brexit and Covid, but I hope this changes and we can look forward to what should be a strong Q1 both for Sutcliffe and the construction sector as a whole.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Mark Robinson, group chief executive at <a href=\"https:\/\/scapeconstruct.com\/construction-lp\/?gclid=CjwKCAiA24SPBhB0EiwAjBgkhgGCG2AHOIf2uG-m7fZQFVwTqUfa9tq2DypRmTZvc0MIIcB4cTctWRoC9X4QAvD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SCAPE<\/a>, said:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&#8220;Further growth in the autumn, set against the context of the long-term inflation and labour supply challenges that characterised much of last year, clearly demonstrates the industry\u2019s resilience.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&#8220;However, the impact of Omicron in exacerbating ongoing staff shortages means that the sector is likely to endure further disruption over the coming months.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&#8220;Public sector construction will continue to make up a significant volume of the industry\u2019s output.
