{"id":104608,"date":"2022-01-28T10:35:23","date_gmt":"2022-01-28T10:35:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=104608"},"modified":"2022-01-28T10:35:23","modified_gmt":"2022-01-28T10:35:23","slug":"fmb-mandatory-licensing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/fmb-mandatory-licensing\/104608\/","title":{"rendered":"Small builders call for mandatory licensing for building firms"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Results from the most recent State of Trade Survey from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmb.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Federation of Master Builders<\/a> showed that 86% of respondents are calling for mandatory licensing for building firms<\/h2>\n<p>Small builders are crying out for the UK government to introduce measures to curb rogue traders and keep customers safe.<\/p>\n<p>With a focus on standards, licensing would professionalise the industry, remove rogue traders and help protect consumers.<\/p>\n<p>Inflation and the rising cost of living is raising the risk of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/victim-to-cowboy-builders\/102362\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">number of cowboy builders<\/a> looking to take advantage of cash-strapped consumers. 95% of builders are seeing a rise in material costs, with 74% under pressure to pass these increased costs on to the consumer.<\/p>\n<h3>The latest FMB survey for Q4 2021 found:<\/h3>\n<h4>Licensing<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>86% of FMB members want the UK Government to introduce a mandatory licensing regime to help raise standards in the building industry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Workload<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>The repair, maintenance and improvement (RMI) sector is performing most strongly, with 32% of respondents reporting an increased workload this quarter.<\/li>\n<li>Housebuilders report a 19% increased workload, and the industrial and commercial sector only an 8% increase.<\/li>\n<li>Despite this growth, all sectors have lower rises in workload than in Q3 2021.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Skills<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>43% of builders are struggling to hire carpenters\/joiners, down 4% on last quarter.<\/li>\n<li>41% of FMB members are finding it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/robot-bricklayers\/47225\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">difficult to hire bricklayers<\/a>, down 4% on last quarter.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Prices<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Nearly all FMB members (95%) reported an increase in material costs in Q4 2021.<\/li>\n<li>91% of respondents expect material costs to increase in Q1 2022.<\/li>\n<li>74% of builders have put up their prices for work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>\u2018<\/strong>Rogue traders take work away from quality builders\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Brian Berry, chief executive of the FMB, said: \u201cToday\u2019s FMB State of Trade Survey shows loud and clear that the industry is crying out to be regulated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn what other walk of life could you have so much responsibility regarding the safety of consumers and not need any basic level of competence?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Government need to listen to industry on this matter. They are the boots on the ground that have seen the shoddy and dangerous work cowboy builders deliver.
