{"id":104834,"date":"2022-02-01T12:20:10","date_gmt":"2022-02-01T12:20:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=104834"},"modified":"2022-02-01T12:20:10","modified_gmt":"2022-02-01T12:20:10","slug":"sustainable-expansion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/sustainable-expansion\/104834\/","title":{"rendered":"Kier to deliver sustainable expansion of Winterstoke Hundred Academy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kier.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kier<\/a> has been appointed by North Somerset Council and the <a href=\"https:\/\/clf.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cabot Learning Federation<\/a> to deliver a new \u00a330.5m sustainable expansion for Winterstoke Hundred Academy in Weston-Super-Mare<\/h2>\n<p>The new net-zero school building, funded by Homes England\u2019s Housing Infrastructure Fund, will be an expansion of the Winterstoke Hundred Academy and will provide 900 new pupil places when complete.<\/p>\n<p>The building was procured through the <a href=\"https:\/\/scfframeworks.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Southern Construction Framework<\/a>, and supports the North Somerset Council\u2019s commitment to make North Somerset carbon neutral by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>The three-storey building has been designed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/the-construction-industry\/103833\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">achieve net zero carbon<\/a> in operation, a BREEAM \u2018excellent\u2019 rating and have a 10% biodiversity net gain.<\/p>\n<p>The new school facilities are expected to cater to years 7 to 11 and include on-site energy generation and a recycling centre to help reduce carbon emissions, as well as extra bike storage to provide pupils with a sustainable option of cycling to school.<\/p>\n<p>Kier will also provide an on-site sustainability lab, which will provide on-site vocational training during construction from the Kier team and consultants.<\/p>\n<p>The Sustainability Lab is part of Kier\u2019s commitment to deliver social value to the school and local community with students and teachers set to design the internal \u2018eco\u2019 features for the lab. The Sustainability Lab will continue as a usable facility once works have been completed in Summer 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the scheme, Kier will be supporting surrounding educational institutions offering students work experience, apprenticeships and placements.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018A new net-zero building with clear environmental benefits\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Jason Taylor, regional director for Kier Construction Western &amp; Wales, said: \u201cNorth Somerset Council and Cabot Learning Foundation have a clear vision to provide sustainable educational buildings and we are delighted they have appointed us to deliver the expansion at Winterstoke Hundred Academy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe share their vision and passion and through our Building for a Sustainable World commitments at Kier, we will create a new net zero building with clear environmental benefits as well as offer employment and training opportunities to the local community as part of our social value commitments.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018A defining moment\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Steve Taylor CEO of Cabot Learning Federation commented: \u201cWe are delighted that this project has reached such a defining moment. The partnership with Kier and North Somerset Council has been key to bringing us to the point where we can expand the offer of this already over-subscribed school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt its inception two years ago, the school spoke to its community regarding its intended focus on environmental science.
