{"id":105381,"date":"2022-02-08T14:01:33","date_gmt":"2022-02-08T14:01:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=105381"},"modified":"2022-02-08T14:01:33","modified_gmt":"2022-02-08T14:01:33","slug":"renewable-energy-sources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/renewable-energy-sources\/105381\/","title":{"rendered":"Renewable energy sources reported as driver behind utilities construction"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>It has been reported that in value terms, 79% of energy generation projects over the past five years have been related to renewable energy sources \u2013 with 21% of these representing gas and nuclear energy<\/h2>\n<p>While construction projects for energy generation using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/uk-solar-industry\/94862\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">solar power<\/a> represent the largest proportion of contract awards by volume; in value terms, solar projects represent just 4% of total value across energy-related construction projects.<\/p>\n<p>In the period 2016 to 2021, projects in the wind sector both onshore and offshore have also made up of just half of all energy generation projects, and 58% of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/on-site-renewables\/103460\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">all renewable projects.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In order to deliver the government\u2019s ambition of net zero by 2050, there needs to be more of a focus on increasing wind and solar energy generation.<\/p>\n<p>While the bulk of generation needed is planned to be provided by renewables, there is also a need for more reliable sources of power such as nuclear or power stations that burn hydrogen or gas with carbon capture and storage.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Electricity a key driver of growth\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>In 2020, UK electricity construction contributed 41% of total infrastructure work, an increase from 24% in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, electricity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/november-construction-output\/103639\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">construction output<\/a> grew by 66% year on year in 2020. Electricity is likely to remain a key driver of growth into the medium-term within the gas and electricity market as generation capacity is renewed and larger-scale renewables generation, particularly offshore wind and biomass, is commissioned.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Charting the real-time transition to renewable sources of energy\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Laura Pardoe, product Manager at AMA Research and editor of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amaresearch.co.uk\/report\/utilities-construction-gas-and-electric-market-report-uk-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Utilities Construction: Gas and Electric Market Report<\/a> commented: \u201cThis is an incredibly exciting time to be monitoring construction in the energy sector and charting the real time transition to renewable sources of energy generation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has been a 70% increase in electricity generation from renewables since 2016; over the same period 80% of contract awards have been for low carbon options showing a clear direction of future travel.
