{"id":105796,"date":"2022-02-15T15:42:33","date_gmt":"2022-02-15T15:42:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=105796"},"modified":"2022-02-15T15:42:33","modified_gmt":"2022-02-15T15:42:33","slug":"industrial-decarbonisation-contract","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/industrial-decarbonisation-contract\/105796\/","title":{"rendered":"Turner &#038; Townsend secures industrial decarbonisation contract"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.turnerandtownsend.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Turner &amp; Townsend<\/a> have been appointed, under a new industrial decarbonisation contract, to install Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) technology at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.viridor.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Viridor<\/a>&#8216;s Energy from Waste facility at Runcorn<\/h2>\n<p>The CCUS technology will remove nearly 1 million tonnes of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/carbon-offsetting-in-construction\/102996\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> carbon dioxide<\/a> from the atmosphere every year.<\/p>\n<p>It is essential to the UK Government\u2019s 10-point plan for a green industrial revolution. The plan aims to support &#8216;green jobs&#8217; and achieve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/journey-to-net-zero-strategy\/105797\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">net zero ambitions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Turner and Townsend will provide Project Management Consultant (PMC) services for the project.<\/p>\n<h3>HyNet North West<\/h3>\n<p>The industrial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/fusion21-decarbonisation-framework\/99562\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">decarbonisation<\/a> contract will lay the groundwork for the integration of <a href=\"https:\/\/hynet.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HyNet<\/a> North West low carbon and hydrogen energy cluster.<\/p>\n<p>HyNet will\u00a0enable the carbon dioxide captured at Runcorn to be transported and permanently stored offshore in depleted Liverpool Bay gas fields.<\/p>\n<p>Hynet, is one of only two industrial cluster schemes to receive Track 1 status for CCUS as part of the UK Government\u2019s industrial decarbonisation challenge.<\/p>\n<h3>What is Turner &amp; Townsend&#8217;s role?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>project management<\/li>\n<li>project controls<\/li>\n<li>contract &amp; procurement services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The industrial decarbonisation contract will use a collaborative approach of industry-leading consultants for engineering, CCUS technology, legal, planning, permitting and economic modelling.<\/p>\n<p>The initial phase aims to develop the Phase 2 submission as part of the Business, Energy &amp; Industrial Strategy (BEIS) industrial decarbonisation challenge fund&#8217;<\/p>\n<h3>&#8216;First of a kind project in the UK&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>Andrew Etherington, director at Natural Resources at Turner &amp; Townsend, made the following comments:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe installation of CCUS technology at the Runcorn Energy from Waste facility is a first of a kind project in the UK and a major enabler of the new low carbon industrial age.\u00a0 We are delighted to be involved with such a cutting-edge project that will help reduce carbon emissions in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCollaboration across government, investors, academia and industry is absolutely vital to addressing the climate emergency and this major programme is a live example of how that partnership can work.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Given the number of EfW plants in the UK and globally, the project also represents a major opportunity for the UK to encourage inward investment, skills, and jobs, as well as taking a global lead on this rapidly evolving technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Viridor net zero ambitions<\/h3>\n<p>Runcorn is at the foundation of Viridor\u2019s strategy to achieve net zero emissions by 2040. It is also part of Viridor&#8217;s ambition to be the first net negative emissions waste and recycling company in the UK by 2045.<\/p>\n<p>Looking to the future, the development of modular CCUS plants on another five EfW sites combined with two planned bespoke CCUS plants would deliver saving of c.1.5 MT CO<sub>2 <\/sub>per year.<\/p>\n<p>CCUS plants would also contribute to the local economy by creating around\u00a01,000 construction jobs and up to 180 skilled green jobs in Scotland, Wales and the English regions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mk-custom-module-container\">\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Turner &#038;
