carbon cements to cut CO2\u00a0emissions by 4m tonnes"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Government-backed research has successfully developed and trialled new low carbon cements which have 60% lower embodied CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions\u00a0than Portland Cement<\/h2>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">During the Carbon Trust\u00a0project<i>,<\/i> concretes containing 22 low carbon multi-component cements were tested for their durability and performance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/shift-to-net-zero-concrete\/100286\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cements for UK concrete production<\/a> consist of two main components, which are usually Portland cement (CEM I) and limited quantities of either fly ash**, GGBS*** or limestone powder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">In this project, multi-component cements with three main ingredients were developed: CEM I-fly ash-limestone powder, and CEM I-GGBS-limestone powder.<\/p>\n<h3>Annual savings of 4m tonnes of CO<sub>2\u00a0<\/sub><\/h3>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">If the new low carbon cements are fully adopted in the UK, up to 4m tonnes of CO<sub>2<\/sub> could be saved every year.<\/p>\n<p>The research has been supported by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/department-for-business-energy-and-industrial-strategy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BEIS<\/a>) led by the Mineral Products Association (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mineralproducts.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MPA<\/a>) and managed Industrial Energy Efficiency Accelerator (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/industrial-energy-efficiency-accelerator-ieea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IEEA<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The MPA has recommended to the British Standards Institution (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsigroup.com\/en-GB\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BSI<\/a>) that these new cements should be included in the UK concrete standard (BS 8500).<\/p>\n<h3>Huge step to deliver net zero concrete and cement<\/h3>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Commenting on the development of the cements, Dr Richard Leese, MPA Director \u2013 Industrial Policy, Energy and Climate Change, said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">&#8220;This is a huge step forward in the delivery of the UK<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/ecocem-cement-industry\/102493\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> concrete and cement industry\u2019s roadmap to beyond net zero.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">&#8220;These new cements have the potential to accelerate real environmental savings for construction projects and complement the sector\u2019s wider decarbonisation programme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">&#8220;Following adoption in the British Standard it is important that designers and contractors understand that these are commercially viable materials, tested on UK construction sites with the proven ability to save embodied carbon now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Reducing emissions across construction<\/h3>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Minister for Industry Lee Rowley said: &#8220;The UK is committed to reducing emissions across all sectors, including construction, and development of these low-carbon cements can have a significant impact in making a vital construction material cleaner and greener.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">&#8220;Supported by the government-funded Industrial Energy Efficiency Accelerator programme, the MPA project is a great example of how the UK\u2019s innovators are leading the fight against climate change.&#8221;<br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/>Paul McKinney, Associate Director and IEEA Programme Manager at the Carbon Trust added:<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">&#8220;We are really pleased by the success of the MPA\u2019s Industrial Energy Efficiency Accelerator project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">&#8220;This is a great example of an industry working together to reduce its carbon footprint, contributing to the journey towards net zero.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">&#8220;The manufacture and rigorous testing undertaken for a wide range of low carbon multi-component cements will hopefully soon lead to recognition within the relevant British Standard, leading to widespread uptake across the UK construction sector.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div
