{"id":107268,"date":"2022-03-09T10:06:01","date_gmt":"2022-03-09T10:06:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=107268"},"modified":"2022-03-10T12:02:45","modified_gmt":"2022-03-10T12:02:45","slug":"wates-programme-gender-diversity-construction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/wates-programme-gender-diversity-construction\/107268\/","title":{"rendered":"Wates launches programme to increase gender diversity in construction"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wates.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wates Group<\/a> has announced a new programme to bring 125 women into the construction industry by 2025, to accelerate gender diversity in construction<\/h2>\n<p>Wates group will work in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.women-into-construction.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Women into Construction<\/a> (WiC) to increase gender diversity in construction, by providing training and employment opportunities for women at all stages of their careers.<\/p>\n<p>With less than 15% of the UK <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/featured\/international-womens-day-construction-talent\/107141\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">construction workforce represented by women<\/a>, Wates and WiC will deliver four employment schemes over a two-year period, each targeting a different area of the business.<\/p>\n<p>As well as supporting women into a variety of site-based roles, it will engage with managers and employees from across the Group to ensure an inclusive<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/featured\/international-womens-day-woman-working-construction\/107140\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> gender diverse environment<\/a> for all, including female colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>The programme aims to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Raise awareness:<\/strong> Providing information and advice to encourage women to consider careers in construction and the built environment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Open opportunities:<\/strong> Offering tailored training to provide women with the right skills to access job opportunities in construction, as well as work experience to challenge perceptions of careers within the industry.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Widen industry talent pools:<\/strong> Increasing the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/women-construction-tiktok-discrimination\/107058\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">women applying for and working in construction,<\/a> including apprenticeships, on-site and office-based roles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The partnership will see 60 women enrolled into work placements across the business, with a target to recruit at least 50% on a permanent basis.<\/p>\n<p>Wates will also work with other partners like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stemreturners.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">STEM Returners<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youngwomenstrust.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Young Women\u2019s Trust<\/a> to ensure pathways into construction are open and available to a wider pool of women in different life stages.<\/p>\n<p>This programme is the next key step in Wates\u2019 commitment to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/women-in-the-construction-industry\/104691\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">improving gender diversity in the workforce<\/a> across all levels.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, Wates announced a complete overhaul of its family-friendly policies, including enhanced paternity and partner leave and increased maternity leave, to enable a greater sharing of responsibilities at work and home, and develop a workforce with a more inclusive mindset.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, in 2021 the Group introduced flexible working principles, as well as an inclusive learning programme available to all colleagues.<\/p>\n<h3>Increasing pathways to ensure gender diversity in the construction industry<\/h3>\n<p>Nikunj Upadhyay, inclusion and diversity director at Wates Group, commented: \u201cWith less than 15% of the construction workforce being female, it is critical that we create pathways that encourage more women to explore the opportunities available within our industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven the growing talent needs of the industry to meet the country\u2019s building requirements, it is a great time to explore a career in construction.
