{"id":107442,"date":"2022-03-11T13:07:07","date_gmt":"2022-03-11T13:07:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=107442"},"modified":"2022-03-11T13:07:07","modified_gmt":"2022-03-11T13:07:07","slug":"construction-future-skills-exhibition-government-technology-skills-gap-shortage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/construction-future-skills-exhibition-government-technology-skills-gap-shortage\/107442\/","title":{"rendered":"Construction professionals call on government for education rethink to combat construction technology skills gap"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Construction employers, decision-makers, educators and students are appealing to the government to tackle the construction technology skills gap and safeguard the future of the trades industry<\/h2>\n<p>On 3rd March 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/people\/lee-rowley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">construction minister Lee Rowley<\/a> and more than 30 employers attended<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moulton.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Moulton College<\/a>\u2019s Construction Future Skills exhibition and workshop in Northamptonshire, to address the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/construction-recruitment\/103041\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">construction technology skills shortage<\/a> facing the industry.<\/p>\n<p>The solutions they came up with included asking the government to facilitate better on-the-job training, which could be achieved through better work experience opportunities and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/learning-culture\/105640\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">technology-focused apprenticeships<\/a>. Other suggestions such as improving flow of learning between schools, colleges and employers, better integration of education and industry, and emphasis on learning lifelong skills were also discussed.<\/p>\n<h3>The construction Future Skills event presented ways to tackle the construction technology skills gap<\/h3>\n<p>Moulton College\u2019s Construction Future Skills event was supported by Constructing Excellence (CE) Midlands and the National Federation of Builders (NFB). The exhibition space showcased new technologies and illustrated how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/construction-technology-news\/artificial-intelligence-cameras\/95792\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AI,<\/a> automation, robotics, and other technologies are impacting the industry.<\/p>\n<p>It also ran a workshop that explored the ways that the industry can establish the hard and soft skills construction needs for the future so that the sector can bridge the the construction technology skills gap. Attendees were encouraged to debate, share experiences, and network. However, it is clear challenges with courses and awarding bodies remain to be resolved.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>The construction industry is adapting and improving to address the skills shortage<\/h3>\n<p>Construction minister Lee Rowley added:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been fantastic to meet some of the young people looking to make construction their career and see their enthusiasm for seeing first-hand the technology paving the way for the future of this industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese students could be tomorrow\u2019s leaders of the change we are all trying to enact, so it was truly inspiring to hear some of the discussions, ideas, and creativity from them, as well as industry innovators driving construction forward.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s so very important that all voices across the sector are heard, and that we come together to provide the right opportunities, education, and inspiration to the next generation to make a real difference to the way we build and achieve our goals of increased sustainability and innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moulton college principal &amp; CEO Corrie Harris said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur construction industry is always adapting and improving and is embracing innovation faster than ever.
