{"id":108380,"date":"2022-03-28T12:32:59","date_gmt":"2022-03-28T11:32:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=108380"},"modified":"2022-03-28T12:32:59","modified_gmt":"2022-03-28T11:32:59","slug":"beard-grade-i-listed-library-refurbishment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/beard-grade-i-listed-library-refurbishment\/108380\/","title":{"rendered":"Beard appointed to replace columns on Grade I listed library"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beardconstruction.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Beard<\/a> has been appointed to replace 28 historic columns as part of a major Grade I listed library refurbishment, on one of the UK&#8217;s most important architectural sites<\/h2>\n<p>Beard has been onsite from July at St John\u2019s College, Oxford, to work on the \u00a310m Grade I listed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/building-control-news\/secondary-glazing-plumstead-library\/80358\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">library refurbishment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a016<sup>th<\/sup> century Old Library, and 17<sup>th<\/sup> century Laudian Library extension is located in the Canterbury Quadrangle.<\/p>\n<p>The columns are an integral\u00a0part of the historic Quadrangle &#8211; but are beginning to fail structurally &#8211; ruling out a cosmetic repair.<\/p>\n<p>Once it was clear the columns would need to be removed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightandwright.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wright and Wright architects<\/a> and the Beard team set out to find the right replacements to complete the Grade I listed library refurbishment.<\/p>\n<p>It was essential to ensure that the aesthetic of the new columns remained in keeping with the rest of the building, however, the site where the original stone was quarried has long closed down.<\/p>\n<p>The stone for the original columns is Bletchingdon marble and was mined locally.<\/p>\n<p>By working with expert stonemasonry firm, Szerelmey and Wright &amp; Wright architects, a carboniferous limestone, Swaledale fossil, was identified as the ideal replacement.<\/p>\n<p>As the stone is not commonly used in Oxford, approval from Oxford City Planning Department and Historic England had to be sought, and after passing these approvals the stone was quarried and carefully worked to shape.<\/p>\n<p>The historic columns are particularly important as Canterbury Quadrangle is one of the few remaining examples in the UK of the high baroque architectural style, dating back to the early 17<sup>th<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n<h3>A building of huge cultural and historical significance<\/h3>\n<p>Jonathan Brock project manager at St John\u2019s, from Beard commented: \u201cIt is a massive honour to be entrusted to work on a building of such huge historical and cultural significance.
