{"id":109089,"date":"2022-04-11T13:51:14","date_gmt":"2022-04-11T12:51:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=109089"},"modified":"2022-04-11T13:57:06","modified_gmt":"2022-04-11T12:57:06","slug":"actis-hybris-environmental-product-declarations-epds-insulation-carbon-footprint","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/actis-hybris-environmental-product-declarations-epds-insulation-carbon-footprint\/109089\/","title":{"rendered":"Actis Hybris EPDs reveal insulation\u2019s impressive cradle-to-grave carbon footprint"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>A series of new Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) on the flagship insulation created by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/stakeholders\/actis-insulation\/38716\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Actis<\/a> shows that its cradle-to-grave environmental footprint is even more impressive than it was when the registration process was carried out four years ago<\/h2>\n<p>This means its entire lifecycle primary energy consumption, already only two-fifths of that used by conventional rigid board insulation alternatives back in 2018, is now even kinder to the planet.<\/p>\n<p>The EPDs, to EN 15804, were carried out on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/actis-hybrid-insulation-2\/99661\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Actis\u2019 honeycomb-style Hybris insulation<\/a>, the cornerstone of its wider Hybrid range which also includes insulating breather membranes and an insulating vapour control layer.<\/p>\n<p>Key findings have been verified by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inies.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">France\u2019s national reference database<\/a> INIES, which hosts an easy-to-access database of environmental and health data on construction products and equipment. It, like the British <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bregroup.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BRE<\/a>, is a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eco-platform.org\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ECO platform<\/a>, which aims to make verified EPDs freely available at a European level.<\/p>\n<p>These show that Hybris\u2019 use of non-renewable primary energy resources is only 87% of the level used in 2018, while its global warming potential is just 82% of the previous figure.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, the primary energy use for 105mm Hybris was 111 MJ per sq m while now it is 96.1 MJ.<\/p>\n<p>The volume of greenhouse gases used to produce a square metre of the product in 2018 was 2.93kg CO<sub>2<\/sub>, while in 2021 it was 2.39kg CO<sub>2<\/sub>.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Overall lifecycle is kinder to the planet\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Actis UK and Ireland sales director Mark Cooper explained: \u201cWe installed a new manufacturing plant at our headquarters in south-west France a couple of years ago which is more environmentally efficient. As production forms a major part of the cradle-to-grave process, making our production processes more efficient means the overall lifecycle is kinder to the planet.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Actis Hybris\u2019 small size and lightweight generates fewer CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions<\/h3>\n<p>The EPDs, which look at every stage of the process from production, transportation construction and use to recycling, highlight how Hybris\u2019 small size and lightweight means fewer CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions are created during the transportation stage.<\/p>\n<p>The three 18-page documents go into granular detail on energy resource consumption, global warming potential, water consumption, air and water pollution, ozone layer depletion potential and materials available for recycling.<\/p>\n<p>Other points raised in the EPDs include its zero-waste policy, with onsite closed-loop recycling meaning all scraps can be regranulated and fed back into the next wave of production.<\/p>\n<p>Although outside the scope of the Environmental Product Declaration, its thermal efficiency and user comfort were worthy of note, with the report\u2019s author saying: \u201cHybris is both lightweight and vertically rigid. It does not settle over time compared to heavier insulating materials. This is important for the long-term reduction of thermal bridges once the insulation has been installed. It has a positive impact on thermal comfort in winter by preventing cold wall effects and on the reduction of energy consumption by long-term insulating performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The independently verified report also notes the product\u2019s ability to keep homes cool in summer as well as warm in winter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough its reflective properties, the alveolar insulation contributes to very effective summer thermal insulation. Its reflective films reflect up to 95% of infrared thermal radiation.
