{"id":110164,"date":"2022-04-29T16:32:13","date_gmt":"2022-04-29T15:32:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=110164"},"modified":"2022-04-29T16:32:13","modified_gmt":"2022-04-29T15:32:13","slug":"uks-first-passivhaus-leisure-centre-now-open-exeter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/uks-first-passivhaus-leisure-centre-now-open-exeter\/110164\/","title":{"rendered":"UK\u2019s first Passivhaus leisure centre is now open in Exeter"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The UK\u2019s first Passivhaus leisure centre has opened in Exeter following innovative engineering and design work by Arup and S&amp;P<\/h2>\n<p>The nation&#8217;s first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/passivhaus-leisure-centre-spelthorne\/97423\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Passivhaus leisure centre<\/a> is the culmination of a 20-year partnership between global engineering and consulting firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arup.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arup<\/a> and leading architects <a href=\"https:\/\/space-place.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">S&amp;P<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, St Sidwell\u2019s Point is one of only three <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/custom-self-build-project\/100580\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Passivhaus<\/a> leisure centres in the world. It can also boast that it is the most energy-efficient leisure centre in the UK. This means that it uses 70% less energy than the average leisure centre, and to make the project even more appealing the estimated payback period is only eight to nine years.<\/p>\n<p>S&amp;P were lead designers on the project, in partnership with Arup as mechanical and electrical services consultants and civil and structural engineers.<\/p>\n<h3>What is so special about a Passivhaus building?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>very low heating requirement<\/li>\n<li>excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/actis-labc-partnership-cpd-partner\/108916\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">insulation<\/a><\/li>\n<li>triple-glazed windows<\/li>\n<li>airtight spaces<\/li>\n<li>no thermal bridges<\/li>\n<li>heat recovery<\/li>\n<li>designed to last 80 years<\/li>\n<li>designed to withstand extreme changes in weather<\/li>\n<li>includes state-of-the-art new swimming and fitness facilities<\/li>\n<li>microfiltration system to boost water quality<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The design principles are considered so effective that the Passivhaus Institute will use the Exeter project to inform the UK\u2019s standards for similar future schemes.<\/p>\n<p>The project is part of Exeter City Council\u2019s wider efforts towards its target of reaching net zero by 2030. The UK&#8217;s first Passivhaus leisure centre also has a 50% water reduction target.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8216;A\u00a0low-carbon, healthy environment for sport and fitness can be developed&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>Nic Bryant, associate director at S&amp;P, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSt Sidwell\u2019s Point demonstrates that a low-carbon, healthy environment for sport and fitness can be developed within high-quality, contemporary design. We hope this serves as an example of what is possible in meeting the highest standards of sustainability in a wide range of public buildings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Building services lead at Arup, Stephen Platt, added:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking with S&amp;P, we have created a highly-sustainable community asset which demonstrates our commitment to creating spaces that make a contribution to local places and support health and wellbeing.
