Liverpool’s Greener Grid Park, a \u00a325m zero carbon scheme<\/a> to increase green energy use, has entered the final stages of construction<\/h2>\n

The project, being carried out by Statkraft<\/a>, will see the Greener Grid Park built off Lister Drive in Tuebrook.<\/p>\n

The scheme aims to help to remove fossil fuels from the UK\u2019s energy supply and maximise the amount of renewable energy that can be distributed through the grid.<\/p>\n

‘A need for additional stability services to the Liverpool grid’<\/h3>\n

Planning permission was initially granted by Liverpool City Council in 2020 after National Grid ESO identified a need for additional stability services to the Liverpool grid.<\/a><\/p>\n

The site will mimic the spinning turbines of a traditional power station, providing the high inertia that grid operators rely on to maintain grid stability.<\/p>\n

As power from renewable sources like wind and solar is fed into the structure, a 67 megavolt amps reactive synchronous condenser, coupled with a 50-tonne flywheel, provide the inertia required to ensure the network frequency and voltage are held stable.<\/p>\n

Contractors NRS Group have now finalised all major construction work at the site.<\/p>\n

Two synchronous condensers, supplied by ABB, have recently been installed and the final stages of development included the installation of supporting components and auxiliary systems.<\/p>\n

Statkraft has\u00a0<\/b>invested over \u00a31.4b in UK renewable energy infrastructure<\/h3>\n

Guy Nicholson, head of grid integration at Statkraft UK said: “Statkraft has\u00a0<\/b>invested over \u00a31.4 billion in the UK\u2019s renewable energy infrastructure since 2006, and we\u2019re proud to be involved in a project that\u2019s bringing more reliability to Liverpool\u2019s power supply<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“The Lister Drive Greener Grid Park will not only create more opportunities for the city to use green energy but will also contribute to the local economy through jobs and suppliers.”<\/p>\n

Works will continue into late summer this year and\u00a0site is expected to be operational in Autumn 2022.<\/p>\n

Following a period of testing, the site will be handed over to Statkraft, with operations and long-term maintenance services provided by ABB.<\/p>\n
