{"id":111561,"date":"2022-06-07T15:08:57","date_gmt":"2022-06-07T14:08:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=111561"},"modified":"2022-06-30T11:16:15","modified_gmt":"2022-06-30T10:16:15","slug":"artificial-intelligence-ai-hs2-stations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction-news\/artificial-intelligence-ai-hs2-stations\/111561\/","title":{"rendered":"HS2 use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help develop future stations"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"article__title heading size--xxxl page__title\">An SME graduate of\u00a0HS2\u2019s Innovation Accelerator programme is harnessing the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help design future HS2 stations<\/h2>\n<p>The project, led by high-tech SME, OpenSpace Group Ltd, is part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hs2.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HS2 Ltd\u2019s<\/a> Innovation programme and brings together the company delivering Britain\u2019s new high speed rail network with Network Rail; intercity train operator, Avanti West Coast; and the University of Birmingham.<\/p>\n<p>The six month proof-of-concept project will use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/ai-and-machine-learning-transform\/97643\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Artificial Intelligence (AI)<\/a> and LiDAR technology to digitise passenger flow data and inform the design of future HS2 stations.<\/p>\n<p>Traditionally stations have been designed, built and run in a way that focused on smooth running of trains for the benefit of passengers. However, Future Stations Living Lab will put passengers at the heart of design by creating a real-time replica of the existing Euston station in London.<\/p>\n<p>Central to the project is the combination of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems with cutting-edge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/construction-technology-news\/robots-facilitating-3d-mapping-construction-sites\/108489\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LiDAR sensors<\/a> that will capture highly accurate people movement data at Euston\u2019s forecourt, concourse and ticket gates.<\/p>\n<p>Developed by the auto industry to guide driverless cars, just one LiDAR sensor has the potential to collect movements across the station&#8217;s large forecourt and concourse areas.<\/p>\n<p>The data will be overlaid on a virtual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/hs2s-new-euston-station-design-plans\/107319\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">replica of Euston station<\/a> and used to generate simulations of how people use various key station locations and \u201cwhat-if\u201d scenarios.
