{"id":111702,"date":"2022-06-10T11:22:06","date_gmt":"2022-06-10T10:22:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=111702"},"modified":"2022-06-10T11:22:06","modified_gmt":"2022-06-10T10:22:06","slug":"hs2-trials-first-electric-drilling-rig","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/plant-equipment-supplies-news\/hs2-trials-first-electric-drilling-rig\/111702\/","title":{"rendered":"HS2 trials \u2018first of a kind\u2019 electric drilling rig"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/balfourbeattyvinci.co.uk\/experience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Balfour Beatty VINCI Joint Venture, HS2 Ltd\u2019s construction partner,<\/a> has begun trialling the world\u2019s first electric drilling rig on a construction site in Warwickshire<\/h2>\n<p>The 100-tonne electric drilling rig, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bauer.de\/bma\/Produkte\/drehbohrgeraete\/ebg_33\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BAUER eBG33<\/a>, reduces 1292kg of CO2 per day and noise by 50%, whilst performing the exact same tasks as a traditional rig.<\/p>\n<p>The BAUER eBG33 replaces the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/mpa-chancellor-rishi-sunak-delay-removal-red-diesel-rebate-reduce-energy-costs\/107527\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">diesel engine<\/a> drive with a powerful electric drive, creating a number of environmental benefits including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>reduced exhaust and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/building-control-news\/changes-for-noise\/66878\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">noise emissions<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>high energy efficiency due to modern three-phase asynchronous motor;<\/li>\n<li>and flexibility through an integrated frequency converter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>BAUER are also trialling different E-connection concepts and an innovative concept for set-up operation via an autonomous secondary drive which is independent of the power supply.<\/p>\n<p>It is currently being used by Balfour Beatty VINCI Joint Venture&#8217;s (BBV) deep foundations contractor SB3 (a Joint Venture between Bachy Soletanche &amp; Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering), and works alongside a diesel-powered rig to construct large diameter piles.<\/p>\n<p>Andrea Davidson, HS2\u2019s air quality manager said:&#8221; We are proud to be working with our supply chain and leading manufacturers to drive a step change in the UK construction industry, demonstrating the viability and benefits of emissions-free heavy electric plant.<\/p>\n<h3>Diesel-free construction sites by 2029<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;Being at the forefront of a ground-breaking trial like this is another step on our journey to achieving our target of all diesel-free construction sites by 2029, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/re-thinking-project-management-facilitate-transition-net-zero-in-construction\/111285\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">net zero carbon<\/a> from 2035 &#8211; helping HS2 to become the most sustainable infrastructure project ever delivered.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dan Fawcett, innovation director at BBV said: &#8220;We\u2019re committed to driving real innovation across everything we do. That\u2019s why we\u2019re so excited to trial the world\u2019s first all-electric, high capacity drilling rig at one of our HS2 sites in Warwickshire.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This pioneering project marks a major step forward towards transitioning to all-electric powered plants, which is great news for the environment too.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019ll look to share what we learn from this trial and extend it across our other sites, as well as the wider industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tim Laemmle from BAUER Maschinen GmbH, the rig\u2019s developers and manufacturers, said: &#8220;We\u2019re thrilled to be leading the industry with this electric rig. It is great to be working with HS2, BBV and SB3, as the first UK specialist contractor to demonstrate the capabilities of the product.<\/p>\n<h3>Emission-free equipment for the deep foundation sector<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019re fully committed to bringing emission-free equipment to the deep foundation sector.
