{"id":112831,"date":"2022-07-05T16:22:48","date_gmt":"2022-07-05T15:22:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=112831"},"modified":"2022-07-05T16:31:35","modified_gmt":"2022-07-05T15:31:35","slug":"government-public-buildings-separate-male-and-female-toilets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/building-control-news\/government-public-buildings-separate-male-and-female-toilets\/112831\/","title":{"rendered":"Government announces all public buildings to have separate male and female toilets"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities(DLUHC) has announced that all new public buildings should have separate male and female toilets<\/h2>\n<p>The move follows a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/consultations\/toilet-provision-for-men-and-women-call-for-evidence\">call for evidence<\/a> on demand for separate male and female toilets which gathered a wide range of views, including from pregnant women, older people, disabled people and people who come under the protected characteristic of gender reassignment.<\/p>\n<p>A consultation will be launched in the autumn, which will also consider the design of unisex self-contained cubicles to maximise privacy and whether improvements to disabled persons toilets should be made.<\/p>\n<h3>The announcement offers a narrow and highly specified assessment of provisions in public toilets, with several areas not acknowledged<\/h3>\n<p>Gender neutral facilities mean men and women share the same space for waiting and hand wash facilities. Unisex \u2013 or universal \u2013 toilets are dedicated, self-contained toilets with individual locks which maintain privacy for the single user, often found on public transport and as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/building-control-news\/loo-locations\/104029\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">accessible toilets.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The DLUHC\u2019s announcement suggests that women are at a disadvantage as their facilities only contain cubicles, whereas men\u2019s public toilets have both urinals and cubicles, citing the greater demand for women\u2019s toilets to facilitate more frequent use for several reasons, including pregnancy and sanitary needs.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday\u2019s announcement (4<sup>th<\/sup> July 2022) has offered no acknowledgement in regards to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openaccessgovernment.org\/uk-healthcare-transgender\/119311\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">trans, nonbinary or intersex individuals<\/a> who may also have these needs. Studies have found that almost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stonewall.org.uk\/lgbt-britain-trans-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">half of trans individuals do not feel comfortable using public toilets<\/a> and there are increased <a href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/uk\/butch-lesbian-public-toilet-women-abuse-government-review-gender-neutral-facilities-833787\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports of gender-non-conforming individuals being challenged<\/a> in separate male and female toilets.<\/p>\n<p>Universal toilets offer some protection from these confrontations with single cubicles designed to respect the privacy of the user and they also meet calls for more amenities for single fathers-such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/buildings-changing-places-toilets\/56887\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">changing stations<\/a> not often found in men\u2019s toilets.<\/p>\n<h3>Separate unisex (or universal) toilets should also be provided if there is space<\/h3>\n<p>The Government has advised that universal toilets be included in new public buildings, but not at the expense of female toilets. The changes will be made through building regulations and guidance. At the time of writing, disabled toilet provision will not be affected by the changes.<\/p>\n<p>Minister for Equalities Kemi Badenoch MP said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is vital that women feel safe and comfortable when using public facilities, and that their needs are respected.
