{"id":112951,"date":"2022-07-08T12:33:10","date_gmt":"2022-07-08T11:33:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=112951"},"modified":"2022-07-08T12:33:10","modified_gmt":"2022-07-08T11:33:10","slug":"hs2-lays-first-wendover-dean-viaduct-foundations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/hs2-lays-first-wendover-dean-viaduct-foundations\/112951\/","title":{"rendered":"HS2 lays first of Wendover Dean Viaduct foundations"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>An expert team of HS2 ground engineers has started work on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hs2.org.uk\/building-hs2\/viaducts-and-bridges\/wendover-dean-viaduct\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wendover Dean Viaduct<\/a> foundations, sinking the first of more than 50 carbon-saving concrete piles<\/h2>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"Fg0NIEvv4iM\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Foundation work begins on HS2\u2019s carbon-saving Wendover Dean Viaduct\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Fg0NIEvv4iM?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The Wendover Dean Viaduct foundations are part of the\u00a0450m long viaduct- south of the village of Wendover in Buckinghamshire- and will be the first major railway bridge in the UK to be built with a \u2018double composite\u2019 structure, using significantly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/hs2-updates-streethay-designs-80-less-concrete\/112085\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">less carbon-intensive concrete<\/a> and steel in comparison to a more traditional design.<\/p>\n<p>Over the summer, a team made up of contractors Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial Construction and BAM Nuttal(EKFB) \u00a0will construct 53 concrete piles, which will range between 38 and 46m deep, to form the foundations of the structure.<\/p>\n<p>A concrete steel cap will support the pier which will support the weight of the bridge structure above. Holes will be bored and backfilled instead of hammering the 14m high piles into the ground. This approach will reduce the amount of work on site and cut disruption for local residents. The first \u2018double composite\u2019 beams will be installed next year.<\/p>\n<h3>Cutting disruption and saving carbon<\/h3>\n<p>EKFB worked with design partner ASC (a joint venture between Arcadis, Setec and COWI) and specialist architects Moxon on the \u2018double composite\u2019 approach which was inspired by structures on the French high speed TGV network.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of using solid pre-stressed concrete beams to form the bridge spans, the viaduct will use two steel girders sandwiched between two layers of reinforced concrete to create a lightweight and super strong hollow span.<\/p>\n<p>This approach is set to save an estimated 7,433 tonnes of embodied carbon within materials\u2013 the equivalent of someone taking 20,500 return flights from London to Edinburgh \u2013 and help HS2 achieve its goal of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/reduce-construction-industrys-carbon-footprint\/108643\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">halving the amount of embedded carbon in construction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Nine evenly spaced piers will support the deck of the viaduct and will be placed to carefully reflect the near symmetry of the ground beneath, reducing the silhouette of the structure viewed across the valley.<\/p>\n<p>The structure beams will be made from weathering steel, which will age to a characteristically dark russet finish and echo the natural tones of the surrounding landscape.<\/p>\n<p>Once complete, the historic field boundaries and hedgerows will be recreated to provide uninterrupted access for farmers and local residents. A mix of trees and shrubs commonly found across the Chiltern chalk hills will be used for new woodland planting around the viaduct, including Oak, Beech, Hazel and Wild Cherry.<\/p>\n<h3>\u201cDelivering a lighter, stronger and more elegant structure\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>HS2 Ltd Project client Rohan Perin said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/hs2-zero-carbon\/103533\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HS2 trains will be zero-carbon from day one<\/a>, offering a cleaner, greener\u00a0way to travel, cut the number of cars and lorries on our roads, cut demand for domestic flights, and help the fight against climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we\u2019re also serious about reducing the amount of carbon we use during construction, and Wendover Dean is a great example of how we\u2019re using the latest engineering techniques to do just that.
