{"id":113344,"date":"2022-07-21T07:05:31","date_gmt":"2022-07-21T06:05:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=113344"},"modified":"2022-07-20T16:06:12","modified_gmt":"2022-07-20T15:06:12","slug":"newcastle-city-council-partners-with-equans-on-27m-decarbonisation-works","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/newcastle-city-council-partners-with-equans-on-27m-decarbonisation-works\/113344\/","title":{"rendered":"Newcastle City Council partners with EQUANS on \u00a327m decarbonisation works"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Decarbonisation works will make key public buildings across Newcastle more energy efficient thanks to a partnership between the City Council and EQUANS and \u00a327m of government funding<\/h2>\n<p>Newcastle City Council has partnered with EQUANS to implement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/public-sector-decarbonisation\/93173\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">decarbonisation works across the city in public buildings<\/a>. The council successfully secured \u00a327m in funding through the government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/public-sector-decarbonisation-scheme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Work is currently being carried out at Blandford House, home to the Discovery Museum, Newcastle City Library, the Civic Centre and East End Pool, while a further<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/upgrade-public-buildings\/100596\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> six schools will also benefit from upgrades<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All the projects are expected to be completed this year.<\/p>\n<h3>Decarbonisation works include low carbon heating, solar panels, LED lighting and improving insulation<\/h3>\n<p>Gosforth Pool, Walker Activity Dome, YHN House, the Palatine Products building, Fenham Library, the Pattern Shop and Newcastle Trampoline Park have all been upgraded with heat pumps and solar panels.<\/p>\n<p>A new heating system, heat pump, solar panels, new windows and insulation have been installed at the Theatre Royal&#8217;s Royal House.<\/p>\n<p>Four city centre car parks have had LED lighting upgrades and solar panels have also been installed at nine schools.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/featured\/solar-energy-barriers-uk-hollis\/111045\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Installing solar panels<\/a> means buildings will be powered by clean, renewable energy, helping to reduce the reliance on expensive energy from the national networks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/government-boiler-upgrade-scheme-gas-heat-pumps\/110489\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Heat pumps are normally three times more efficient than gas boilers<\/a>, helping to save money and improve air quality.<\/p>\n<h3>Reducing running costs as well as reaching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/featured\/social-value-and-net-zero-construction-industry\/112113\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">net zero<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Tim Wood, director of Sustainability &amp; Innovation at EQUANS, said: \u201cWe are proud to be working alongside Newcastle City Council as it makes significant strides to reduce the carbon emissions of the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, some of Newcastle\u2019s most iconic landmarks will be upgraded with high-tech energy and heating systems, showcasing EQUANS\u2019 innovative solutions focused on delivering an environmentally-friendly future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Jane Byrne, Newcastle City Council\u2019s Connected City Cabinet member, said: \u201cBuildings are one of the biggest sources for carbon emissions so taking action to retrofit these sites is an important step towards creating a more sustainable future for our residents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen all the work is complete, these projects will remove over 4,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year \u2013 the equivalent to taking over 2,800 cars off the road \u2013 while saving hundreds of thousands of pounds in running costs for the buildings per year.
