{"id":113649,"date":"2022-07-27T14:33:34","date_gmt":"2022-07-27T13:33:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=113649"},"modified":"2024-09-10T16:13:12","modified_gmt":"2024-09-10T15:13:12","slug":"hs2-hydrogen-generator-trial-improves-air-quality-and-cuts-carbon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/hs2-hydrogen-generator-trial-improves-air-quality-and-cuts-carbon\/113649\/","title":{"rendered":"HS2 hydrogen generator trial improves air quality and cuts carbon"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>A successful HS2 hydrogen generator trial has found that the two zero-emissions hydrogen fuel cell-based electricity generators could directly replace diesel generators<\/h2>\n<p>The HS2 hydrogen generator trial- utilising two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geopura.com\/our-technology\/products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GeoPura 250kVA hydrogen power units<\/a> (HPUs)- took place in August 2021 at HS2\u2019s Victoria Road Crossover Box in Ealing, as a direct replacement for diesel generators to power machinery on the site.<\/p>\n<h3>The successful trial shows that the HPUs can match the production of a diesel generator, with fewer emissions<\/h3>\n<p>The HPU\u2019s derive power from a hydrogen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/reduce-risk-fuel-theft-red-diesel-construction-industry\/109557\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fuel<\/a> cell, with power capabilities ranging from 20kW through to 2MW.\u00a0 They use 100% green hydrogen produced from renewable energy, and data from the trial showed that running the units for 400 hours eliminated around 51 tonnes of carbon compared to using standard diesel generators.<\/p>\n<p>The hydrogen generators are also quieter than standard diesel generators and the only emission is water which is so clean it\u2019s drinkable. A hydrogen tube trailer and hydrogen cannisters were used to fuel the generator.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"HS2 pioneers diesel-free construction using hydrogen, electric and biofuels\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Mpvyw-PavvY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>The trial has already picked \u00a0up the \u2018Best Use of Technology Award\u2019 at this year\u2019s Construction News Awards<\/h3>\n<p>Andrea Davidson, HS2\u2019s Air Quality manager said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is another example of how HS2 is driving change in the industry by trialling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/reduce-risk-fuel-theft-red-diesel-construction-industry\/109557\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">alternative fuel innovations,<\/a> which will help us develop a thriving low carbon hydrogen sector in the UK and work towards a cleaner, greener energy system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith no harmful pollutants, the technology brings major <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/featured\/indoor-air-quality-iaq-2\/113164\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">air quality<\/a> benefits to the workforce and local communities around construction sites, something which is vitally important to HS2 across the whole project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Skanska Costain STRABAG (SCS JV) commissioned and tested the hydrogen generators. James Richardson, managing director of SCS JV, said:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;SCS JV is committed to reducing our environmental footprint by identifying innovations to power our site operations, such as trialling this hydrogen fuel cell at our Victoria Road crossover box site. We are striving to be diesel-free across all our sites by 2023 and recently announced our first diesel-free site at Canterbury Road.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Cunningham, managing director of GeoPura, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis initial trial at HS2 successfully demonstrates the capability of our Hydrogen Power Units in such challenging applications. The units are particularly valuable in inner city sites such as this, as they not only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/construction-industry-renewable-energy-net-zero-carbon-built-environment\/108895\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reduce the CO2 impact of the works<\/a> but also eliminate harmful NOx, particulate, and noise emissions, making the site a better neighbour in the local community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s great to be working with such innovative, forward-thinking companies who are taking action to reduce their environmental impact by setting bold diesel-free targets.
