{"id":113728,"date":"2022-07-29T08:00:46","date_gmt":"2022-07-29T07:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=113728"},"modified":"2022-07-28T14:49:04","modified_gmt":"2022-07-28T13:49:04","slug":"99-of-electricians-believe-there-are-major-risks-with-ev-charging-installations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/99-of-electricians-believe-there-are-major-risks-with-ev-charging-installations\/113728\/","title":{"rendered":"99% of electricians believe there are major risks with EV charging installations"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>A new survey of 500 UK electricians has found that 99% of electricians understood there to be major risks associated with electrical vehicle charging work and only 28% have received specific training<\/h2>\n<p>The skills organisation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityandguilds.com\/news\/july-2022\/working-electricians-believe-there-are-major-risks-with-ev-charging-work#make-a-pledge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">City and Guilds<\/a> has found in a recent survey that 99% of electricians believe there are major risks with electrical vehicle(EV) charging installations and only 28% have undertaken specific EV charge point training.<\/p>\n<p>The UK is aiming to meet EV charging targets by 2030 and purchases of the vehicles are increasing.<\/p>\n<p>With 73% of respondents likely to seek work in installing or repairing EV charge points in the next 12 months, the lack of training and confidence demonstrates a clear risk unless companies ensure their workforce has the necessary training, skills, knowledge and experience to undertake this work safely.<\/p>\n<h3>A significant lack of appropriate training and skills could be leading to unsafe installations of EV chargers<\/h3>\n<p>EV chargers are becoming more widespread and are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/electrical-safety-2\/104384\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">being installed in homes, streets and commercial locations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This new research is supported by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eandt.theiet.org\/content\/articles\/2022\/03\/tens-of-thousands-of-ev-chargers-installed-in-homes-could-be-dangerous\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">findings from CENEX and OZEV<\/a>\u00a0(compiled for the Department for Transport) which reported that nearly a fifth (18%) of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/nhbc-report-electric-vehicle-charging\/99719\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new at home charge point installations installed<\/a> as part of the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) had dangerous or potentially dangerous issues, and only 32% were labelled as satisfactory.<\/p>\n<h3>Insufficient training undermines the Government\u2019s targets for EV charging point installation<\/h3>\n<p>David Phillips, managing director at City &amp;
