In an open letter to Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak, the CEO of BRE urges the Tory leadership candidates to recommit to decarbonising Britain\u2019s buildings and reaching net zero targets<\/h2>\n

In an open letter, Gillian Charlesworth, CEO of the Building Research Establishment<\/a>, has urged Tory leadership candidates to reaffirm their commitments to reaching net zero targets and decarbonising Britain\u2019s buildings.<\/p>\n

As the Conservative leadership contest- and the race to become prime minister- continues, candidates\u2019 stances on tackling climate change, the cost-of-living crisis and reaching net zero targets<\/a> by 2050 are of pressing concern.<\/p>\n

BRE urges Tory leadership candidates to produce solid, long-term strategies to combat climate change<\/h3>\n

In the letter, Charlesworth acknowledges the difficult current economic circumstances of the country but reiterates that a lack of action on energy efficiency and reaching net zero will only make these problems worse in the long term.<\/p>\n

The CEO calls for a national retrofitting strategy, led by local councils, to decrease the country\u2019s reliance on natural gas and consequently keep energy bills down. This would not only help immediately alleviate the cost-of-living crisis\u00a0but ensure that the 29m households in Britain are fit for the future.<\/a><\/p>\n

Public infrastructure and businesses would also benefit from the retrofitting strategy<\/a>, which would help decarbonize the built environment and increase the chances of the UK reaching it\u2019s 2050 net zero targets.<\/p>\n

An open letter from Gillian Charlesworth \u2013 CEO of the Building Research Establishment (BRE) \u2013 to the Conservative leadership candidates<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

As Chief Executive of BRE, the UK\u2019s foremost centre for driving positive change in the built environment, I am compelled to reiterate the importance of decarbonising Britain\u2019s buildings. At present, heat and energy use in our buildings makes up a quarter of the UK\u2019s total greenhouse gas emissions and tackling this will be crucial to reaching net zero by 2050. This is why we urge you, as candidates to become the country\u2019s next Prime Minister, to publish credible and effective plans to decarbonise our homes and buildings.<\/em><\/p>\n

This year has been tough for our economy, and it will become tougher still as cost-of-living pressures and macroeconomic conditions worsen. However, we will be sentencing families, businesses, and communities to an even more costly and bleak future if we abandon our net zero commitments. We strongly believe that, for the UK to have a resilient economy and a prosperous future, we must continue to act on climate change \u2013 and central to this should be driving a green transition in the built environment.<\/em><\/p>\n

While an increased focus on investment in renewable energy is welcome, the Government\u2019s current plans do not go far enough to address two of the biggest issues we currently face: tackling rising energy costs and decarbonising the built environment. The crisis in global energy prices can be quickly and effectively alleviated by improving the energy efficiency of our homes and buildings.<\/em><\/p>\n

For this reason, we are calling on candidates to reaffirm their commitment to tackling climate change and reaching net zero by 2050, by setting out a fully funded national retrofit strategy to roll out efficiency measures to all UK households. This should include cost-effective solutions such as insulation that will reduce demand for natural gas, address spiralling energy bills and, ultimately, make Britain\u2019s homes fit for the future.<\/em><\/p>\n

Local authorities will be at the heart of this strategy \u2013 delivering change in their areas and enforcing new regulations \u2013 and it is vital that they are adequately resourced to do so. The future Government must also set out clear directives on how to train, or retrain, the hundreds of thousands of workers required to retrofit the UK\u2019s 29 million homes.<\/em><\/p>\n

The need to roll out and invest in retrofit measures extends beyond housing. With nearly a fifth of all gas being consumed by the non-domestic sector, a lack of any retrofit strategy will result in higher costs for our businesses and public infrastructure \u2013 with these costs also being fed down to households.<\/em><\/p>\n

Setting out a clear, long-term strategy to retrofit the UK\u2019s buildings will not only ensure we continue to deliver the Net Zero Strategy, but it will also bolster our energy security by lowering demand for natural gas.<\/em><\/p>\n

Decarbonising our homes and buildings is a priority which we cannot afford to ignore, and we look forward to continuing to work with the Government to support the UK on its path to net zero.<\/em><\/p>\n
