{"id":114593,"date":"2022-08-23T15:56:48","date_gmt":"2022-08-23T14:56:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=114593"},"modified":"2022-08-23T15:56:48","modified_gmt":"2022-08-23T14:56:48","slug":"first-tunnel-cross-passages-completed-by-hs2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/first-tunnel-cross-passages-completed-by-hs2\/114593\/","title":{"rendered":"First tunnel cross passages completed by HS2"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>HS2 has completed the first tunnel cross passages that will form part of thirty-eight underground connections between the northbound and southbound tunnels<\/h2>\n<p>The first tunnel cross passages in HS2\u2019s Chiltern works have been completed as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/hs2-historic-tunnelling-breakthrough-made-with-dorothy-the-massive-tunnel-boring-machine\/113591\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> two giant tunnelling machines<\/a>, named Florence and Cecilia, reach almost halfway in their 10-mile journey.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hs2.org.uk\/building-hs2\/tunnels\/tunnel-drives\/chiltern-tunnel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chiltern tunnels<\/a> will carry high speed trains between London and the North at speeds of up to 200mph (320km\/h). The trains will travel through two parallel tunnels linked by short passages for use in emergencies.<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"pSleg2_FoNA\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"HS2 completes first Chiltern Tunnel cross passages\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pSleg2_FoNA?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h3>The process behind the tunnel cross passages<\/h3>\n<p>Delivered by HS2\u2019s main works contractor, Align \u2013 a joint venture formed of Bouygues Travaux Publics, Sir Robert McAlpine, and VolkerFitzpatrick \u2013 each passage is between 15 and 20 metres in length.<\/p>\n<p>The mining team used a remotely controlled excavator to break out of and excavate from one running tunnel to the adjacent tunnel.\u00a0 As the excavation is progressed, the ground was supported using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/guides-reviews\/3d-technology-concrete-construction\/99781\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sprayed concrete lining (SCL).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A water-proof membrane was then installed in the SCL-lined tunnel, followed by a secondary concrete lining constructed by placing concrete behind formwork installed in the cross passage.<\/p>\n<h3>The tunnels will be constructed with rigorous safety precautions in place<\/h3>\n<p>Once the passageway is complete, the safety doors- <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/safety-doors-contract\/83232\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">manufactured by Booth Industries<\/a>&#8211;
