{"id":114784,"date":"2022-08-30T11:36:00","date_gmt":"2022-08-30T10:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=114784"},"modified":"2022-08-30T11:36:00","modified_gmt":"2022-08-30T10:36:00","slug":"sisk-becomes-first-contractor-in-ireland-to-switch-to-hvo-fuel-across-all-sites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/plant-equipment-supplies-news\/sisk-becomes-first-contractor-in-ireland-to-switch-to-hvo-fuel-across-all-sites\/114784\/","title":{"rendered":"Sisk becomes first contractor in Ireland to switch to HVO fuel across all sites"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>John Sisk &amp; Son will switch to HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) for use in plant and machinery on all of its Irish construction sites<\/h2>\n<p>Sisk, one of Ireland\u2019s largest construction companies, has announced that it will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/plant-equipment-supplies-news\/hydrogenated-vegetable-oil\/106008\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">switch to HVO fuel<\/a> by the end of 2022, following successful trials.<\/p>\n<p>Sisk is the first construction business in Ireland to mandate the switch to HVO across all sites, supplied by Certa.<\/p>\n<h3>HVO will reduce CO2 emissions by over 90% and other harmful pollutants by over 80%<\/h3>\n<p>HVO is a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/heat-network-projects-funding-to-help-28000-households-ditch-fossil-fuels\/113797\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> fossil-free<\/a> biofuel typically made by reacting waste vegetable oils and animal fats with hydrogen to create fuel suitable for use in diesel engines.<\/p>\n<p>The switch to HVO will deliver Sisk a 90% <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/net-carbon-negative\/99301\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reduction in CO2e<\/a> and 85% reduction in other harmful emissions such as particulate matter.<\/p>\n<p>The amount of diesel that Sisk uses annually emits 3,000 tonnes of CO2, which accounts for 60% of its scope 1 carbon emissions.<\/p>\n<h3>Earlier this year, Sisk successfully trialled a switch to HVO across several civil engineering projects<\/h3>\n<p>Sisk was the first construction business in the UK to utilise this sustainable fuel at its Northstowe project in Cambridgeshire for its client, Homes England. This project used circa 1.5 m litres of HVO.<\/p>\n<p>In April, 100% of site fuel procured by Sisk projects in the UK was HVO. As a result, carbon emissions of Sisk UK operations have been reduced by 36%.<\/p>\n<p>The business is also exploring a switch to HVO and similar supply arrangements for its European projects.<\/p>\n<p>Ian O\u2019Connor, energy manager, John Sisk &amp; Son said: \u201cOur transition to HVO is a major strategic step change and it will positively impact our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/energy-performance-certificates\/104123\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">carbon performance<\/a> immediately. We estimate a 60% reduction of our Scope 1 emissions when the entire company is using this fuel.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have set ourselves ambitious targets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johnsiskandson.com\/what-we-do\/sustainability\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030<\/a> and this is another important milestone on the journey.
