{"id":115184,"date":"2022-09-07T11:07:32","date_gmt":"2022-09-07T10:07:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=115184"},"modified":"2022-09-07T11:07:32","modified_gmt":"2022-09-07T10:07:32","slug":"saint-gobain-carbon-neutrality-targets-first-to-gain-approval-of-science-based-targets-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/saint-gobain-carbon-neutrality-targets-first-to-gain-approval-of-science-based-targets-initiative\/115184\/","title":{"rendered":"Saint-Gobain carbon neutrality targets first to gain approval of Science Based Targets initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The Science Based Targets initiative1 has approved Saint-Gobain\u2019s carbon neutrality targets as consistent with the organization\u2019s new net zero standard and the Paris Climate Agreement<\/h2>\n<p>The validation of Saint-Gobain\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/featured\/zero-playbook-setting-the-path-to-decarbonising-construction\/115059\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">carbon neutrality targets<\/a> makes Saint-Gobain the first company in its sector worldwide to receive approval since the introduction of the new standard at the end of last year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wri.org\/initiatives\/science-based-targets#:~:text=The%20Science%20Based%20Targets%20initiative%20%28SBTi%29%3A%201%20Defines,assessment%20and%20validation%20of%20targets.%20More%20items...%20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)<\/a> offers insight such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Defining and promoting best practices in emissions reductions and net-zero targets in line with climate science<\/li>\n<li>Providing target setting methods and guidance to companies to set science-based targets in line with the latest climate science<\/li>\n<li>A team of experts to provide companies with independent assessment and validation of targets<\/li>\n<li>Serves as the lead partner of the Business Ambition for 1.5\u00b0C campaign, an urgent call to action from a global coalition of UN agencies, business and industry leaders that mobilizes companies to set net-zero science-based targets in line with a 1.5 degrees C future<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The approval allows Saint-Gobain to further refine the company roadmap to carbon neutrality<\/h3>\n<p>Saint-Gobain&#8217;s commitments to reduce in absolute terms by 2030 from 2017 its direct and indirect CO2 emissions (scopes 1 and 2) by 33% and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/scope-3-emissions-guidance-to-better-enable-achieving-net-zero-buildings\/114281\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">scope 3 emissions<\/a>, mainly linked to purchasing and transport, by 16% by 2030 was already validated in November 2020 by the SBTi.<\/p>\n<p>This validation of the Group&#8217;s long-term commitments to achieve net zero CO2 emissions, both direct and indirect, along its entire value chain by 2050 allows it to further refine its roadmap towards carbon neutrality.<\/p>\n<p>It will entail a reduction in CO2 emissions of at least 90% in the three scopes by 2050, with additional sequestration projects planned for residual emissions.<\/p>\n<h3>Aiming for the highest possible reduction in temperature rises through long term commitments<\/h3>\n<p>Claire Pedini, senior vice president, Human Resources and Corporate Social Responsibility of Saint-Gobain, said: \u201cSaint-Gobain is very proud to have our greenhouse gas emission reduction targets approved by the SBTi to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
