{"id":115596,"date":"2022-09-15T10:47:51","date_gmt":"2022-09-15T09:47:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=115596"},"modified":"2022-09-15T10:47:51","modified_gmt":"2022-09-15T09:47:51","slug":"hs2-chiltern-grassland-transformation-project-lays-first-million-cubic-metres-of-chalk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/hs2-chiltern-grassland-transformation-project-lays-first-million-cubic-metres-of-chalk\/115596\/","title":{"rendered":"HS2 Chiltern grassland transformation project celebrates laying first million cubic metres of chalk"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The HS2 Chiltern grassland transformation project is using excavated materials from the Chiltern tunnels to create chalk grassland in the surrounding site<\/h2>\n<p>The HS2 Chiltern grassland transformation project on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/chalk-grassland-gains-approval\/95077\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HS2\u2019s largest construction site<\/a> has celebrated laying out the first million cubic metres of reused chalk around the south portal of the Chiltern tunnel.<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"b67iiKBIk48\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Transforming HS2&#039;s biggest construction site into a chalk grassland wildlife haven\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/b67iiKBIk48?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The plans have been developed by HS2\u2019s main works contractor, Align \u2013 a joint venture formed of Bouygues Travaux Publics, Sir Robert McAlpine, and VolkerFitzpatrick \u2013 working with design partners Jacobs, Rendel-Ingerop, and LDA Design, that form Align D.<\/p>\n<h3>The Chiltern excavation project will see 2.6 million cubic metres of chalk removed by giant tunnelling machines<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/hs2-tunnel-chilterns\/99844\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Two giant tunnelling machines \u2013 named Florence and Cecilia<\/a> \u2013 are currently around 4 miles into their journey under the Chilterns. The material excavated is mixed with water to form a slurry before being pumped out of the tunnel.<\/p>\n<p>It is then processed at a slurry treatment where flint and water are extracted, to leave chalk cake which is then laid out on site \u2013 together with recycled concrete and aggregates from construction works to create 127 hectares of new chalk grassland, woodland, wood pasture and wetland habitats.<\/p>\n<p>Ninety hectares of chalk grassland will be seeded into re-profiled soil layers. This will sit alongside new areas of woodland, wood pasture and wetlands, including almost 65,000 trees and shrubs of 32 species and nearly 3.5km of new hedgerows.<\/p>\n<h3>Chalk grassland can host a wide variety of biodiversity<\/h3>\n<p>Chalk grassland \u2013 a type of calcareous grassland &#8211; is habitat of international conservation importance mainly found on limestone and chalk downlands of south-east England and the Isle of Wight.<\/p>\n<p>Lime-rich, but low in nutrients, the thin soil holds little water and drains well. These conditions encourage a huge variety of smaller herbs and wildflowers and over 40 plant species can be found in one square metre of grassland, including some of the UK\u2019s rarest orchids as well as highly diverse invertebrate populations.
