{"id":115777,"date":"2022-09-22T08:00:51","date_gmt":"2022-09-22T07:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=115777"},"modified":"2023-05-10T17:47:52","modified_gmt":"2023-05-10T16:47:52","slug":"costain-installs-uks-first-3d-printed-concrete-water-chamber","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/mmc-news\/costain-installs-uks-first-3d-printed-concrete-water-chamber\/115777\/","title":{"rendered":"Costain installs UK\u2019s first 3D printed concrete water chamber"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.costain.com\/what-we-do\/water\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Costain<\/a> supports United Utilities and ChangeMaker3D to advise, deliver and install the UK&#8217;s first 3D printed concrete water chamber<\/h2>\n<p>ChangeMaker3D worked in partnership with United Utilities to successfully design, 3D-print and install a wastewater chamber at one of the utility company\u2019s test facilities in Cheshire.<\/p>\n<p>Costain has supported United Utilities and ChangeMaker3D throughout the 12-month project to advise, deliver and install the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/guides-reviews\/3d-technology-concrete-construction\/99781\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3D printed concrete<\/a> chamber for testing in the UK water sector.<\/p>\n<h3>Water sector takes the lead on an innovative technology known as \u2018Printfrastructure\u2019.<\/h3>\n<p>\u2018Printfrastructure\u2019 is shown to deliver a 25% reduction in carbon, 20% cost saving and 55% reduction in labour versus traditional methods.<\/p>\n<p>The 3D printed concrete water chamber was built-in under four hours and there was a significant reduction in the materials used.<\/p>\n<h3>Printfrastructure reduces requirement to work at height<\/h3>\n<p>It has also demonstrated safety benefits by reducing the requirement to work at height or in confined spaces.<\/p>\n<p>Gavin Stonard, Costain\u2019s water technical development director said: &#8220;A 3D printed structure of this kind is ground-breaking within the UK water sector. We work with water and wastewater companies to develop solutions that improve water quality, affordability and resilience.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Partnering with United Utilities has highlighted how technology can provide novel solutions to help overcome industry challenges on safety, and efficiency, whilst driving down carbon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>3D printing can help construction meet net zero goals<\/h3>\n<p>United Utilities\u2019 chief engineer (Innovation), Lisa Mansell said: &#8220;This is important for us in realising our aim to drive efficiency and improvement in everything we do for the benefit of our customers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The future is exciting for water companies like United Utilities who are trailblazing innovation.
