{"id":115972,"date":"2022-09-26T11:22:33","date_gmt":"2022-09-26T10:22:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=115972"},"modified":"2022-09-26T11:22:33","modified_gmt":"2022-09-26T10:22:33","slug":"nearly-half-of-uk-tradespeople-have-suffered-symptoms-of-asbestos-exposure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/nearly-half-of-uk-tradespeople-have-suffered-symptoms-of-asbestos-exposure\/115972\/","title":{"rendered":"Nearly half of UK tradespeople have suffered symptoms of asbestos exposure"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>With 25% of UK tradespeople encountering asbestos each week, this Mesothelioma Awareness Day seeks to raise awareness of the symptoms of asbestos exposure<\/h2>\n<p>This Mesothelioma Awareness Day (26th September), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electricaldirect.co.uk\/blog\/asbestos-and-the-trades-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ElectricalDirect<\/a> has surveyed trade workers from across the nation to see how often they encounter it, the symptoms of asbestos exposure, and the impact this has on their health.<\/p>\n<p>The study found that 72% of tradespeople have come across asbestos \u2013 the fibre-like material once used for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/stakeholders\/actis-insulation\/38716\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">insulation<\/a> \u2013 in their working lives.<\/p>\n<h3>25% of UK tradespeople encounter asbestos every week<\/h3>\n<p>Tradespeople are amongst the most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/featured\/the-dangers-of-asbestos-construction\/106024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">at-risk workers of asbestos-related diseases<\/a>, and across all industries, the majority are exposed to the potentially lethal material on a regular basis.<\/p>\n<p>Three in five (60%) find it every year, over a third (35%) say every month, and one in 12 (8%) come face to face with asbestos every day.<\/p>\n<p>This has serious consequences, with 44% having had symptoms of an asbestos-related disease, or knowing a colleague who has. Every week, the deaths of 20 tradespeople are attributed to asbestos.<\/p>\n<p>Some trades are more likely to be exposed than others, and so should be particularly cautious. Almost every carpenter (95%) questioned had some history with asbestos, and bricklayers (88%) are a close second.<\/p>\n<p>The trades that are most likely to encounter asbestos are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Carpenter (95%)<\/li>\n<li>Bricklayer (88%)<\/li>\n<li>Builder (79%)<\/li>\n<li>Building surveyor (79%)<\/li>\n<li>Plumber (79%)<\/li>\n<li>Electrician (78%)<\/li>\n<li>Scaffolder (78%)<\/li>\n<li>Joiner (74%)<\/li>\n<li>Painter decorator (63%)<\/li>\n<li>Plasterer (62%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Symptoms of asbestos exposure to look out for<\/h3>\n<p>ElectricalDirect\u2019s research found that most UK tradespeople are unaware of these symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>When asked to identify the signs of asbestosis (a disease caused by long-term exposure to asbestos), almost two-thirds (64%) failed to select a persistent cough, and over half (55%) didn\u2019t pick out shortness of breath.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Rhianna McClymont, lead GP at digital healthcare provider Livi, described the cause of the chronic lung disease:\u00a0 \u201cThe asbestos gets lodged in the lungs causing scarring around the air sacs (alveoli), which means oxygen can&#8217;t reach the bloodstream easily. The scarring leads to the lungs hardening, making it more difficult to breathe because the lungs cannot hold as much air as they used to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe condition is caused by long-term exposure to asbestos, a material used in the past for cement, insulation, car parts, and some roof and floor tiles. The fibres in asbestos break down into little pieces when they&#8217;re damaged, released into the air and then breathed in.
