McKinsey<\/a> has launched a new cross-sector coalition of industry stakeholders named as the Net Zero Built Environment Council<\/h2>\n

The Net Zero Built Environment Council, led by McKinsey, will create an alliance of industry leaders seeking to collaborate on creating new pathways to cut greenhouse gas emissions from buildings.<\/p>\n

The new Council will bring together stakeholders across the built environment value chain<\/a>, from industry leaders to scale-ups, to stimulate investment, deployment, and scaling of new materials and technologies that will help reduce emissions at all stages of the building life cycle.<\/p>\n

The built environment is a huge contributor to global emissions<\/h3>\n

The life cycle of buildings is responsible for approximately 40 percent of global CO\u2082 emissions, making the built environment among the highest GHG emitters<\/a>, above electricity production, shipping, and aviation.<\/p>\n

It aims to align siloed supply chains, construction projects and markets, and help industry players to tap into an estimated US$800bn – US$1,900bn in potential green markets.<\/p>\n

The Net Zero Built Environment Council will help create and commercialise new green tech innovations, create global sustainability metrics and research, and promote cost-effective pathways to decarbonising everything from construction methods to materials.<\/p>\n

The launch follows a McKinsey report identifying a lack of collaboration in the sector as an obstacle to decarbonisation<\/h3>\n

McKinsey\u2019s research finds that 76% of emissions from an average building are caused by operations, demonstrating a need for collaborative decarbonisation across the entire built environment life cycle, not just during construction.<\/p>\n

The report found that half of all emissions across the built environment could be eliminated<\/a> with little extra cost. At the same time, 20 percent will be more costly and complex to decarbonise, such as cement and steel<\/a>, requiring more industry partnerships to reduce costs and risks for all new materials and technologies.<\/p>\n
